Doing an Independent Study

The Liberal Studies major requires the completion of an independent study. An independent study is a four-credit course that is focused on original scholarly research. The independent study is arranged on an individual basis between student and professor.

The topic of the independent study is based on a student’s learning track. Usually students will complete the independent study in their junior or senior year. The expectations will vary across disciplines, but all independent study students will work closely with their professors to produce a major piece of scholarship.
