Ramapo College Adult Degree Completion

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about the adult admissions process. Still don’t see the answer to your question? Email us at

Why is Ramapo a great place to complete my degree?

Adult Students at Ramapo are part of the fabric of our community. A concierge team, made up of individuals in the Student Success, Registrar, Office of Student Accounts, and Financial Aid offices ensure your success as you aim towards completing your degree. Classes are offered in a variety of formats through the fall, winter, spring and summer terms allowing you flexibility as you complete your degree.

What is required for me to complete my degree?

Once accepted, a transfer counselor will evaluate your college transcripts and credit, and you will receive a transfer evaluation highlighting credits that will be awarded towards your new degree. Visit to view the curriculum plans for each of our majors as a guide. Once you choose to enroll at Ramapo, individual advisement will take place to ensure progress towards completing your degree.

How long will it take me?

For most traditional majors, courses are offered mostly during the day with some evening and online options available. The answer to this question depends on how many courses you decide to take in any given semester, etc. Once you meet with an academic advisor, a more concrete timeline can be developed.

Many students who want or need an adult-friendly option choose to enter the Accelerated Evening programs in Social Science or Professional Communication. See the requirements and a two-year cycle of classes for each major by visiting the Accelerated Programs page.

How many credits can I transfer?

You may transfer up to 80 credits from coursework at previously attended institutions. Please note that a maximum of 64 credits may be transferred from two-year institutions or community colleges. More detailed information regarding transfer policies may be found here.

As an adult, am I eligible to use all the services of traditional undergraduates?

Absolutely. All students at Ramapo – both adults and traditional undergraduates – have all services available to them, including the Center for Student Success, the Cahill Center for Career Services, the Center for Reading and Writing, the Center for Health Services, the Potter Library, tutoring services and the Bill Bradley Sports & Recreation Center.

Does Ramapo award credits for Prior Learning?

Yes. Students may acquire credit for knowledge that they have gained outside the traditional academic setting, most frequently through work, training, community service and other accomplishments.

We offer Prior Learning Assessment workshops and 1-on-1 advising during your first year to guide you in developing a portfolio that documents how you have met the outcomes of a specific Ramapo course through learning done outside of the classroom.

Prior Learning Assessment Program (PLA)

What is Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)?

Recognizing that knowledge may be acquired in many different ways, Ramapo College offers adult students the opportunity to apply for academic credit for learning that has taken place outside of the traditional college classroom through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Program. The work world, volunteer activities, non-credit courses, workshops, seminars and other activities often involve significant learning experiences. A student who successfully demonstrates that the knowledge gained through one or more of these activities corresponds to the knowledge gained in a Ramapo College course may be granted academic credit. The most common method for students to demonstrate their knowledge and competency is through a PLA portfolio.

What PLA isn’t:

PLA is not “credit for work or life experience.” Credits earn through PLA are awarded not for the experience itself, but for the knowledge, skills or competencies gained through that experience.

Ramapo College is guided by the 10 standards developed by The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) regarding assessment of prior learning.

Why do PLA?

By utilizing PLA to earn college credit, Ramapo students can not only reduce their time to degree but also reduce costs by earning credits at the discounted PLA tuition rate. Moreover, PLA recognizes and validates the complex learning processes that adult students engage in regularly during their day-to-day lives, and helps students connect academic theory and scholarship to their life experiences.

How do I learn more?

The PLA program is administered through the Degree Completion Program. Students interested in learning more about Prior Learning Assessment should make an appointment with Patricia Laprey, director of the Degree Completion Program at 201-684-7388 or

PLA fee structure (2020-2021):
