Convening Group: History

What is the History Major at Ramapo?

The History program at Ramapo College challenges students to develop their skills as researchers, writers, and speakers. It is our mission to prepare students for careers that require an ability to analyze and understand world events and important trends, and to express that knowledge fluently, professionally, and with reliable documentation. We provide our students with dynamic courses in a variety of topics, with on-campus internship opportunities, with opportunities to study abroad or in the field and to engage in experiential learning, with scholarly presentation and opportunities to present their work to a community of scholars, and with hands-on experience in primary source research that can be presented using innovative digital tools or in traditional written formats.

As we provide all students with dedicated advising and career counseling, we expect them to seek and exploit opportunities that prepare them for satisfying careers that challenge their minds and contribute to public knowledge. We believe that every generation has the right and responsibility to make history.

Program Description

Ramapo’s historians have published books and articles on subjects as diverse as immigration, sports history, women’s political activism, the Napoleonic Wars, ancient Mesopotamia, the American Revolution, the Ottoman Empire, the Nazi regime, the Atlantic slave trade, the Vietnam War, and many other topics. Students will have many opportunities to broaden and deepen their knowledge in a wide array of subjects.

In addition to the required courses and a choice of electives, students will develop their own research, writing, and speaking skills and have many opportunities for hands-on learning
