About the Applied Ethics Certificate

The Applied Ethics Certificate bundles several courses so that students may gain additional credentials in this sought-after field. The program aims to provide both a theoretical and practical foundation for addressing ethical issues.

What is Applied Ethics?

Applied ethics, also called practical ethics, looks at moral dilemmas in professional and social contexts, such as:

  • Healthcare: Addressing medical choices, including genetic testing and end of life care
  • Business: Ensuring corporate responsibility, stakeholder inclusion, and fair hiring practices
  • Technology: Managing privacy, mitigating algorithmic bias, and using AI responsibly
  • Environment: Driving sustainability and climate care
  • Civics and public policy: Upholding justice and human rights

What You’ll Learn

Students learn the application of ethical principles across major sectors–from technology and business to healthcare and public policy–to become trusted, ethical change agents. How long does the certificate take to complete?

The Applied Ethics Certificate can be completed in as little as one semester by taking all the 3 courses simultaneously.

Is the Applied Ethics Certificate eligible for financial aid?

If you are a current Ramapo College student receiving aid, the required classes are part of your normal course schedule, therefore are paid through your college account. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (201) 684-7549 to see how many credits you are covered for through financial aid. If you are not a matriculated Ramapo College student, this program is not eligible for financial aid because it is a non-degree program.

What is the total cost of the program?

The courses for the Applied Ethics certificate are all credit-bearing Ramapo College courses and tuition is established annually by the Board of Trustees. The cost per credit is dependent on the semester in which courses are taken, as well as in-state or out-of-state status. To view the tuition cost per credit, please visit the Office of Student Accounts website at www.ramapo.edu/student-accounts/costinfo/.Normal undergraduate tuition and tuition related fees apply to all academic courses (Tuition Information) for undergraduate students. In addition, all relevant non-tuition related charges (e.g., parking fees, dishonored check fees, etc.) apply. Please, contact Office of Student Accounts for payment information.

Will I receive a transcript after completing this program?

Yes, all required courses taken as part of the Applied Ethics certificate program are recorded on your Ramapo College official transcript.   Once completed, your certificate is noted as earned on your Ramapo transcript.  Transcripts may be requested online on the Registrar’s website at www.ramapo.edu/registrar/.

How to Enroll/Apply

Current RCNJ students in Good Academic Standing are automatically eligible for the Applied Ethics Certificate and should use the Major/Minor Declaration Form available through the Registrar’s Office to enroll in this program.

Non-Ramapo students are welcome to apply to this program as a Non-Degree Seeking Student through Ramapo’s Office of Admissions.
