There are a number of student clubs in the School of Theoretical and Applied Science (TAS) and clubs with similar interests in other schools. These clubs give students the opportunity to gather in a social environment to learn more about the topics of mutual interest. This is done by inviting speakers and taking trips to nearby businesses and commercial laboratories. Students have an opportunity to talk about their scientific research and learn what their peers are doing. Refreshments are served at the regularly held meetings for the clubs. Each student club can apply for College funds by submitting an annual report and a budget.

Bioinformatics Club

Computer Club

The goal of the Computer Science club is to provide a forum for students to further their knowledge of the computer industry in an informal setting. The club aims to sponsor seminars featuring industry professionals which are open to all students. In addition the club coordinates trips to local industry related events (such as Linux World Conference in NYC in 2002). The club presents workshops on current technologies (Graphics Design and PHP have been past topics). Finally, club members have also participated in ACM sponsored programming contests across the region.

Environmental Alliance

The Environmental Alliance enables students from across campus to get involved in environmental issues on campus and in the surrounding community. The Alliance typically plays a big role in Earth Week events.

Nursing Club

• Faculty Advisor: Dr. Jody Williams

In the past the nursing club has been very isolated from the nursing community. Nursing is a difficult major; however, we have learned that the club can be a great resource to facilitate fundraising and programs for the nursing students. The club is up and coming and hopefully you will decide to help assist the club in its efforts to become all it can be.

Physics Club

Pre-Med/Pre-Health Club

• Luminus Group: Pre-Med Club (found under clubs section)

This club, which has been in effect for a number of years now, brings together a great group of students who are excited and interested in learning more about the health care field, different practices, and what path they need to follow in order to be admitted to these graduate schools. Every year we bring in guest speakers from all different aspects of this field who can give students a better perspective of their desired professions.

It also serves as great networking and mentoring for all members as most students take very similar courses. Being part of this club is a great way for prehealth students to get to know their advisor, fellow prehealth students, and healthcare professionals who are willing to provide students with shadowing opportunities.

All students who are interested in the health care field are welcome to join!

Math Club

The Mathematics Club is intended to promote a spirit of unity among its members and to provide an active forum for information and for discussion. In particular, internal and external speakers may present talks or seminars on topics of interest. Such presentations will be open to the general community. In addition, the club will provide its members with information pertaining to mathematically related activities in the area, including graduate school and general employment information.

1STEP (Students Together for Environmental Progress)

This group serves as both a student club (with members drawn from all five schools) and as a positive change agent under President Mercer’s Climate Commitment Task Force. The organization seeks to develop, implement, and assess feasible solutions on campus; to act as a sustainability consulting firm for other clubs/organizations; and to promote awareness of sustainability in its various contexts at all levels of campus life.

In addition to student clubs, TAS is home to the college’s chapter of Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society).

Sigma Xi – The Scientific Research Society

Ramapo College’s chapter of the honors society Sigma Xi is open to Ramapo faculty, students and staff conducting scientific research. Typically students are in the TAS Research Honors program are inducted into the chapter each Spring. The chapter hosts Dr. Ariel Fenster (McGill University) each fall for an evening dinner/lecture, and each Spring a Distinguished Speaker provides a guest lecture.
