GoTo Connect – Phone System

Overview

Ramapo is migrating to GoTo Connect, a cloud-based telephony solution that will serve as the college’s primary telephone system.

This initiative is intended to improve the reliability, security, and flexibility of campus communications. Faculty and staff will be able to place and receive calls through the GoTo Connect application while maintaining their existing Ramapo telephone numbers.

Calling

Forward my calls
Forward all incoming calls to an internal extension or external phone number while you’re unavailable to ensure your callers can still speak with someone.

General

Why is our existing phone system being replaced?

The existing phone system is based on outdated, on-premises Cisco hardware that is no longer supported. By transitioning to GoTo Connect, Ramapo will benefit from the scalability and flexibility offered by a modern, cloud-based solution.

What is GoTo Connect?

GoTo Connect is a cloud-based phone and communication system that allows users to make calls and collaborate from virtually anywhere.

  • All-in-One Communication: Combines phone calls, voicemail, and messaging in one easy-to-use platform.
  • Remote Flexibility: Enables faculty and staff to stay connected whether they’re in the office, at home, or on the go.
  • Cost-Effective: Minimizes the need for physical desk phones across campus, helping to lower costs and reduce electronic waste in support of Ramapo’s sustainability initiatives.

Features & Functions of GoTo Connect

Do I need to dial 9-1 when calling an external or outside phone number?

On GoTo Connect, you do not need to dial 9-1 and then the phone number when calling an external our outside phone number.  Simply dial the full 10-digit phone number.

Do I get to keep my current phone extension and phone number when switching to GoTo Connect?

Yes.

Can I enable the GoTo Connect app to automatically open on my computer/laptop?
  1.  Sign in to the GoTo desktop or web app.
  2.  Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3.  Select Settings.
  4.  Under the General section, find the App launch option.
  5.  Select the setting Launch in background.
Can I sign into more than one device with GoTo Connect?

Yes, you can sign into your computer and phone using the GoTo Connect application or web application.

Can I forward my GoTo Connect phone number to another number?

Is there a 'do not disturb' feature on GoTo Connect?

Yes, please follow the instructions here.

Can I download the GoTo Connect app on my cell phone?

Yes, the GoTo app is supported on iPhone and Android.  Search your app store, for GoTo, and download/install it.

Do I need to use my personal cell phone for the GoTo Connect App phone?

The decision to utilize the GoTo Connect app on a personal device is at the discretion of the individual, in consultation with their manager and should be made in accordance with the recommended security best practices.  Please note the Information Technology Services Division is not involved in this decision-making process.

Can I send and receive faxes from GoTo Connect?

Can I make International calls using my GoTo Connect phone?

No, International calls are not currently permitted by Ramapo College.

Can I use Microsoft Teams to make calls with GoTo Connect?

Yes, you can but the features are limited in comparison to the native app.  To install GoTo Connect on Microsoft Teams:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. On the left tile panel, click Apps.
  3. Search for GoTo and click Add.
  4. Open the GoTo app in Microsoft Teams and when prompted, download/install the plugin.
  5. Reopen the GoTo app in Microsoft Teams and Sign-in with your Ramapo username/password.

Headsets

Will I receive a headset?

If you plan to use the softphone on your computer and don’t have a desk phone, you’re eligible to receive a wired headset. You can pick up the headset at The Learning Commons: Room 406, Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm.  The standard headset connects directly to your computer by a wired USB connection.

Is a headset mandatory to use?

No, it is optional but encouraged if you require privacy.

Can I use my own wireless headset or speakerphone?

Yes, most wireless headsets or speakerphones will work.  However, ITS can only verify certain models that are compatible with GoTo Connect.

For individuals who wish to use a wireless headset or a speaker phone , the following models are supported:

  • Wireless Headset: Poly Voyager 4310
  • Speaker Phone: Jabra 7410

Please make arrangements with your department head to purchase these.  ITS will not provide these.

I have a desk phone, will I receive a headset?

No.  Headsets are primarily for soft phone users only.

Voicemail

Will voicemails be migrated?

No, voicemail messages from the old system will not be migrated to GoTo Connect.

Will you need to setup a new voicemail greeting?

Yes, new voicemail greeting will need to be setup.  Instructions are located here.

How do I check my voicemail messages?

You can use one of the following methods if you’re on campus:

  • From your desk phone, press the voicemail button and follow the prompts.
  • From your desk phone, dial *99 and follow the prompts.
  • From your softphone app, navigate to the Voicemail tab.

  • From your softphone app, navigate to the Voicemail tab.
  • Dial your phone number and after the greeting starts, press * and then follow the prompts.
Can my voicemails be transcribed and sent to my email?
  1.  Sign in to the GoTo desktop or web app.
  2.  Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3.  Select Settings.
  4.  Under the Capabilities section, select Voicemail.
  5.  Under the Notifications section, enable the Voicemail-to-email option.
  6. Type in your email address into the Email address field.
  7. Under the Voicemail box section, enable the Voicemail transcription.
