How to Apply – Current Ramapo Students

  • The window to apply for 2019 acceptance has closed.
Ramapo

Students who are at the end of their first semester at Ramapo College still have the option to apply to join the Honors Program. Due to the number of Honors credits needed to graduate with Honors, applicants cannot be considered once they’ve begun their second semester.

The College Honors Program shall consider both quantitative and qualitative measures. For admission, above-average GPA or SAT scores are a necessary, but not sufficient criterion. Because freedom from extrinsic rewards is valued in a College Honors student, grade point average and entrance examination score are only two measures assessing the intellectual, creative, and moral engagement of applicants. Qualitative measures will be used to assess the intellectual independence or engaged learning values of the applicant. It is possible that a student could have high grades or test scores but lack in the intrinsic or ‘engaged learning’ values necessary to flourish in the College Honors Program. It is also possible that a student could have less than excellent test scores but demonstrate the intellectual, creative and moral engagement that is the distinctive disposition of a College Honors student.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an admission interview based on their application materials. These candidates will be interviewed by a two-member panel of the College Honors Advisory Board.

Students who join the Honors Program during their first year are not required to take the Honors First-Year Seminar if they have already taken an FYS. They are required to complete half of the annual co-curricular and community service requirements in the first year.

Steps to Apply

Step 1: Students will complete and submit the Admissions Application by January 1st of their first year at Ramapo.

Step 2: To finalize the application, students must email the admission essay, one faculty recommendation, and a sample of work to honors@ramapo.edu with the headline “Honors Application.”

  • Admission Essay (In 800 words or less): Most people belong to many different communities; groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interests, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong and describe that community and your place within it.
  • One Faculty Recommendation: Please submit one letter from a faculty member of Ramapo College of New Jersey. Letters should demonstrate personal knowledge of your intellectual independence and capacity for engaged learning.
  • Example of Work: Please submit a previously completed essay or project that you consider demonstrates the qualities required for admission to the College Honors Program. Include a description of the assignment and class it was created for.

Step 3: Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an admission interview based on their application materials. These candidates will be interviewed by a two-member panel of the College Honors Advisory Board.

Step 4: If invited to join Honors, inform us of your final decision and prepare for an intellectually engaging college career!
