How to Apply – Current Ramapo Students

Watch this video for an overview of the Honors Program and info on how current first year students can apply:

The application window for first year Ramapo students to join the Honors Program in the Spring is December 1 to January 8.

Ramapo

The College Honors Program shall consider both quantitative and qualitative measures. For admission, excellent performance in the first semester and a high school GPA in a challenging high school curriculum are necessary, but not sufficient, criteria. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Because freedom from extrinsic rewards is valued in a College Honors student, grade point average and entrance examination score (if submitted) are only two measures assessing the intellectual, creative, and moral engagement of applicants. Qualitative measures will be used to assess the intellectual independence or engaged learning values of the applicant. It is possible that a student could have high grades or test scores but lack in the intrinsic or ‘engaged learning’ values necessary to flourish in the College Honors Program. It is also possible that a student could have less than excellent test scores but demonstrate the intellectual, creative and moral engagement that is the distinctive disposition of a College Honors student.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an admission interview based on their application materials. These candidates will be interviewed by a two-member panel of the College Honors Advisory Board.

Steps to Apply

Step 1: To finalize the application, students must email PDFs of the admission essay, one faculty recommendation, and a sample of work to rroot@ramapo.edu with the headline “Honors Application.”

  • Admission Essay (In 800 words or less): Most people belong to many different communities; groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interests, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong and describe that community and your place within it.
  • One Faculty Recommendation: Please submit one letter from a faculty member of Ramapo College of New Jersey. Letters should demonstrate personal knowledge of your intellectual independence and capacity for engaged learning.
  • Example of Work: Please submit a previously completed essay or project that you consider demonstrates the qualities required for admission to the College Honors Program. Include a description of the assignment and class it was created for.

Step 2: Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an admission interview based on their application materials. These candidates will be interviewed by a two-member panel of the College Honors Advisory Board.

Step 3: If invited to join Honors, inform us of your final decision and prepare for an intellectually engaging college career!
