Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) at Ramapo College. A Learning Management System (LMS) is a platform used to deliver courses, and can be used for online, hybrid, or face-to-face courses. The LMS allows instructors to post course resources, create learning activities, setup assignments, manage group work, setup a grade book, communicate with students, and more. All students are encouraged to review the resources provided below.

The Student Experience (18 min.)
Learning how to use a new Learning Management System (LMS) is probably among a long list of challenges at the start of a student’s educational journey. This is why we created the Student Experience video; as a tool to assist these new students on day one, from opening a course invitation email to how one submits an Assignment file before the due date. This video will provide new students the basics to getting started in Canvas with their personal settings, course layout and communication, and submission feedback functionality while also giving other Educational roles a glimpse from a student perspective when navigating Canvas for the first time.

Canvas Student Tour (35 min.)
This Canvas course contains self-paced series of videos to familiarize students with Canvas (including profile, communication, discussions, assignments, grades, quizzes, and more). When students login to Canvas they will see the “Canvas Student Tour” course on their dashboard.

Passport To Canvas – This self-paced Canvas course provides everything students need to know about using Canvas in your classes. Learn about communication tools, navigation, assignments, quizzes, discussion, grades and feedback, peer interactions, and the mobile app. When students login to Canvas they will see the “Passport to Canvas” course listed in the announcements at the top of their dashboard.

Help – login to Canvas and students can access the Help menu in the left column navigation, where they can do the following:

“Report a Problem” which will generate a Help Desk ticket
“Ask Your Instructor a Question”
“Search the Canvas Guides”

Canvas Display Name Change

Changes to your Canvas full name should be submitted to the Name Change Committee. To set your preferred display name in you Canvas profile,

Click Account in the Canvas global navigation. Then click on Settings.
Click Edit settings
Go to Display Name and enter your preferred name.
Click Update Settings.
Your Display Name now shows your preferred name in your User Settings.

How do students access Canvas?
Students can access Canvas at https://ramapo.instructure.com, and explore the system to get accustomed to its features. Students can view the help resources that are available on this page.

What browsers are recommended?
Chrome and FireFox are best. Internet Explorer is NOT recommended.

Is there a mobile app available?
Yes! The Canvas Student App is available for students with Android or iOS devices. Search for Canvas in the app store of your device to get started.

Who should I contact for assistance with Canvas?
If your instructor is not able to assist you, you can submit any problems or questions to the Help Desk. Please provide your name, the instructor’s name, the course name and number, as well as the section in your email to helpdesk@ramapo.edu.
