Ramapo College remains a top institution in the Best Regional Public Universities, as determined in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges, and once again earned a top 10 ranking as a Top Public School in the region. Most notable this year was Ramapo’s first-time listing as an Innovative School, which honors innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities, based on nominations by college presidents, provosts, and deans. Ramapo College also placed 10th for Best Colleges for Veteran Students. Ranking criteria continued to distinguish Ramapo as an institution dedicated to small class size, strong first-year retention and graduation rates and loyal support from alumni.
Institutions ranked in the Best Regional Universities category provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs. Over the past two decades, the U.S. News college rankings, which group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, have grown to be one of the most comprehensive research tools for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

Ramapo College’s residence halls are ranked #1 among all public and private colleges and universities in New Jersey by Niche in its announcement of the 2021 Best College Dorms in America. Nationally, Ramapo maintained its ranking in the top 2 percent, earning spot #34 out of 1,376 institutions. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance
For the 14th consecutive year, Ramapo College of New Jersey is listed in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine. Ramapo is ranked among the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” for in-state tuition and fees for 2020-2021. Ramapo is one of only three New Jersey public institutions of higher education included in the list. The report features institutions that deliver a high-quality education at an affordable price, and Ramapo College was included due to its high four-year graduation rate, abundant financial aid and low cost.
Ramapo College has been named to Forbes’ America’s Best Colleges for 2021, including a top 10 ranking for public medium-sized schools. Only 600 four-year schools were selected out of more than 2,700 for this year’s list. The pandemic created an opportunity for Forbes to re-evaluate how to measure the best colleges in America, which included not only the mere return on investment, but a look at the net price to attend college, grants and scholarships awarded, and student debt (especially length of time to repay loans).
Ramapo College of New Jersey has been recognized as a military-friendly school in the 2021 Guide to Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media. Of the more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide, only the top 15 percent of schools were recognized as military friendly. Ramapo was noted for its services to veterans that include reasonable transfer of credit, financial benefits, veterans clubs, credit for military training and nationally recognized testing programs, flexible class schedules, and membership in the Service Members Opportunities Colleges.
Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education
Ramapo College of New Jersey has been ranked by Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education for 2021-2022. Only 800 institutions were ranked based on 15 indicators that focus more on students and their needs and interests rather than an institution’s academic research. These indicators include an examination of classroom engagement, faculty outreach and mentoring, campus diversity, retention and graduation, and loans and job opportunities.
Ramapo College of New Jersey has received high marks from Business First in its 2020 rankings of the country’s best public colleges. Ramapo was ranked #64, following Rutgers-New Brunswick and The College of New Jersey among the top 100. Criteria for inclusion considered 22 factors, including admission rates and test scores, retention and graduation rates, institutional spending, costs, average earnings after graduation, racial diversity and gender balance. Business First included 425 colleges and universities on its list. To be considered, colleges had to have more than 1,000 full-time students, and more than half of the degrees granted during the most recent academic year were bachelor’s degree level or higher.
Great Values Colleges
Ramapo College has been recognized by Great Value Colleges as the top college in New Jersey and was ranked 24th in the country on its list of Best Disability Friendly Schools. Ramapo College’s Office of Specialized Services (OSS) coordinates the support services and accommodations for approximately 500 students with disability. According to Greatvaluecolleges.net, professional organizations that track disability in the United States note that levels of disability employment, earnings and health vary greatly from state to state, and there is still a vast disparity between American Colleges when it comes to educating people with disabilities. Ramapo was distinguished for its “top-notch disability services that allow their students to succeed.”
Ramapo College of New Jersey is named among the top in College Choice’s 20 Best Colleges in New Jersey in 2021. Ramapo ranks as #1 among the nine public colleges in New Jersey and is ranked #3, with Princeton University and Stevens Institute of Technology, in the top two spots.
College Choice, a leading authority in college and university rankings and resources, developed its list by assessing academic quality, institutional reputation, program accreditation, along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings. Data came from the National Center for Education Statistics, Payscale, and U.S. News & World Report.
Ramapo College of New Jersey moved up three spots and ranks 7th of colleges and universities in New Jersey in College Consensus’s 2021 “Best Colleges in New Jersey” listing. Consensus rankings are based on a comprehensive aggregate of published rankings and verified student reviews.
National Association of Colleges and Employers
Ramapo College of New Jersey has been recognized for excellence in career services by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Ramapo’s “Pathways to Success: Creating a Culture and Structure of Career Development” was named the top program in the category honoring career services best practices in 2021.
Money magazine lists Ramapo College of New Jersey fifth in the state in its 2020 Best College for Your Money rankings list. Ramapo’s ranking also puts it within the top 20 percent of schools nationwide. Money analyzed graduation rates, tuition charges, family borrowing, alumni earnings and more than 20 other data points to find the country’s top higher education values that offer a well-rounded collegiate education.
Consistently ranked in the Princeton Review, Ramapo College is recognized in the listing for 2020 Best Colleges: Region by Region for the Northeast. The lists are based on survey responses from “the true experts in on-campus life – the students.”
Colleges of Distinction
Ramapo College is featured on CollegesofDistinction.com, a website dedicated to honoring schools nationwide for their excellence in student-focused higher education. Ramapo was found to excel in all four Distinction categories measured in the 2019-2020 listing.
The Four Distinction areas assessed include: student engagement, quality of teaching, vibrancy of the college community and success of graduates. Colleges and universities featured must meet minimum standards in each category.
The Templeton Guide
The John Templeton Foundation has named Ramapo College of New Jersey to its Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges, which recognizes institutions that emphasize character development as an integral aspect of the undergraduate experience. Colleges must exhibit a strong and inspiring campus-wide ethos that articulates the expectations of personal and civic responsibility in all dimensions of college life. Selection criteria include:
- The significant involvement and participation of faculty in forming and shaping the ideals and standards of personal and civic responsibility
- Evidence that a wide variety of programs exist to prepare students for lives of personal and civic responsibility
- The integration of personal and civic responsibility standards and activities into the core curriculum or areas of academic study
- External recognition or honors
- Procedures to assess effectiveness of campus-wide character-development programs
