CLEP for High School Students

Update: CLEP testing is now available for both Ramapo and non-Ramapo students. Please review the below information regarding CLEP testing inquiries.

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) gives high school students the opportunity to receive college credit by earning qualifying scores on subject exams. More than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities grant credit for CLEP. Before registering for a CLEP exam, students should search for an institution’s CLEP policy to determine if the college or university they will attend grants credit for CLEP exams. Ramapo College offers CLEP testing services to high school students of any class year interested in taking the CLEP exam.

Test-takers must have a valid, government-issued ID that has both a photo and a signature.  Please see the acceptable forms of ID provided below the registration instructions. Students who arrive at the Testing Center without a copy of their CLEP Registration Ticket and the required valid, government-issued ID will not be allowed to test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does CLEP testing benefit me as a high school student?

Getting ahead in credits helps to not only graduate earlier at your future college or university but it also can give students access to earlier registration times and earlier housing slots at these institutions. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test is available in a variety of subjects and languages including Spanish, History, Psychology, Science, Math, and Business. The CLEP test is a lower cost option for earning college credit and is offered every Wednesday at Ramapo. The CLEP examination fee is only $89 plus a $40 Proctor fee. That’s only $129 for a test that can yield up to 12 credits!

How many credits will I get for taking the CLEP test?

Most colleges publish the required scores for earning CLEP credit on their websites or in a course catalog. The required score for earning CLEP credit may vary from exam to exam. Contact your institution to find out the minimum qualifying score for each exam. Ramapo follows the recommended credit-granting score as set by The American Council on Education.

Each institution reserves the right to set its own credit-granting policy, which may differ from that of The American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) that Ramapo follows. You can contact your college or university to find out the score it requires to grant credit, the number of credit hours granted, and the course(s) that can be bypassed with a satisfactory score.

The minimum score requirements for obtaining credit at Ramapo can be found here: https://www.ramapo.edu/testing/clep-subjects/  The “Credit Granting Score” column on Ramapo’s above website is the score students need to pass and gain credit at Ramapo. The columns after that are the credits received at Ramapo and what course it counts for here. This information that will vary depending on what college/university the student ends up attending. For instance, at Ramapo a score over 50 on the American Literature exam means 8 credits and equates to LITR 220 and LITR 221. However, the credit-granting score and amount of credits may be 6 and the course(s) may be something else at another institution.

How is this different than AP tests?

CLEP and AP are both College Board examinations which test similar content but they function very differently. There are no “CLEP Courses” or College Board–developed curriculum. CLEP is meant to assess learning regardless of where that learning occurred. CLEP testing does not require a course as a pre-requisite to testing.

Any student can take a CLEP test in any subject that they feel they have proficiency in. More than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities grant credit for CLEP. Before registering for a CLEP exam, students should search for an institution’s CLEP policy to determine if the school they will attend grants credit for CLEP exams.

How many CLEP tests can I take?

You can take as many CLEP tests as you wish. Most colleges and universities cap the amount of transfer credits you can transfer in. At Ramapo this limit is 70 credits.

I haven't heard of CLEP testing before. Is this as good as it sounds?

Yes! CLEP testing has been primarily marketed towards current college students locally but we believe it is an important resource for high school students as well. Financially, the CLEP test is a lower cost option for earning college credit. The CLEP examination fee is only $89 plus a $40 Proctor fee. That’s only $129 for a test that can yield up to 12 credits!

How do I send my scores and how long are my CLEP scores good for?

All CLEP exam registrations come with a free score send, which must be used when you register.  However, if you don’t select a score recipient institution during registration or you wish to send your scores to additional institutions, you can request official CLEP transcripts for exams via My Account through a secure online checkout process. Additional score reports can be ordered for a fee of $20 per score recipient. A cumulative transcript is also available that covers all the CLEP exams you have taken and the scores you earned in the last 20 years.

When is the CLEP Test offered?

At the Ramapo College Testing Center, CLEP is offered every Wednesday, once per day. We may be adding more days/times soon!

Can I re-test?

Yes, you can re-test 90 days after your initial CLEP exam.

What is the format of the test?

Students take CLEP exams on a computer and exams contain multiple-choice questions and some writing/speaking portions depending on the exam subject. CLEP exams take about 90–120 minutes to complete, depending on the exam subject. Students receive their CLEP exam scores immediately after completing the exam (except for College Composition and Spanish with Writing).
