Gender Inclusive Housing

Mission Statement

Ramapo College of New Jersey seeks to provide a living environment welcoming to people of all gender identities, not limited by gender binarism. Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) provides students of the same, different, or multiple genders the opportunity to reside together in a shared living space, by mutual agreement, regardless of sex assigned at birth.

The primary goal of GIH is to center the needs and comfort of LGBTQ+ (QT+) students, who often experience marginalization in standard housing arrangements. With GIH, Ramapo seeks to provide a safer, supportive, and affirming housing environment.

Requirements

Participants must agree to the Gender Inclusive Housing Agreement, which requires GIH residents to maintain a welcoming living space free of discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Residents will have a responsibility to develop and uphold standards for the living community, in congruence with valuing all persons and seeking to learn from their diverse experiences and perspectives. Participants must also adhere to all policies and procedures outlined by the Office of Residential Life.

FAQs

Who can participate in GIH?

While GIH foregrounds QT+ students’ needs, students who engage in active allyship are welcome to participate in this process in order to create a cohesive housing unit with the purpose of practicing gender inclusivity.

Where is GIH located on campus?

GIH options are available throughout campus and those approved for GIH follow the same online housing selection process as all other residential students, with the added step of completing the GIH Form.

What is the duration of the GIH program contract?

Participants commit to living in GIH for one full academic year. If they meet housing eligibility standards, students may re-apply for GIH for the following year.

What if someone who requested to take part in GIH decides to leave the program?

Students may request room changes by following published room change procedures. Students who do not fulfill their commitment to live in GIH for a full academic year may be ineligible to take part in future GIH accommodations.

What happens to the remaining suitemates in the event of a vacancy?

If a vacancy occurs, the Office of Residence Life reserves the right to place a “waitlisted” GIH applicant in the suite, leave the vacancy open and combine two or more under capacity suites, or convert the room to a single sex room. This decision is made at the Office of Residence Life’s discretion, however, reasonable accommodations are made whenever possible.

What if I have more questions about GIH?

Please email the Women’s Center & LGBTQ+ Services at women@ramapo.edu.

A Note on Co-Ed Housing

Please note that GIH is neither housing for couples nor the same as co-ed housing. The co-ed housing model is based on the assumption that there are two sexes and refers to residential situations that place students who are assigned male at birth with students who are assigned female at birth. A request for GIH will be denied if the basis for the request is co-ed housing.
