Ramapo College Celebrates Juneteenth and Pride Month

Pride Month / Juneteenth 2023

Juneteenth, also known as “Jubilee Day” and “Freedom Day”, commemorates and honors the official end of slavery in the United States. It represents June 19, 1865, the day federal troops went to Galveston, TX to inform all remaining slaves of their freedom, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was declared. Juneteenth also represents the symbol of liberation that was delayed due to opposition and resistance.

Ramapo College of New Jersey is proud to join with the State and our nation in acknowledging and celebrating Juneteenth. On this day, we celebrate, honor and pay tribute to the rich heritage, history and accomplishments of Black Americans and people of African descent, in our Ramapo community and nationwide, many of whom risked their lives for equality, justice and liberation for all people. In recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth, it is up to us as a community to continue to strive towards cultivating and creating a more diverse and culturally enriched campus community.

The Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Compliance invites the campus community to join us in a Juneteenth gathering for students, faculty & staff of Color and Allies, on Monday, June 20th from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Alumni Lounges, SC 156-158, and via Webex (please check the Daily Digest for the link). EDIC will provide the refreshments and all are welcome to bring their own lunch or snacks!

Ramapo College of New Jersey is proud to recognize LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. This month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many contributions and accomplishments that LGBTQIA+ individuals have made in our society throughout history. In recognizing LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, Ramapo College supports and recognizes the importance of increasing awareness, education, and visibility of Non-Binary, Gender-Nonconforming, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or questioning, Intersex, and Asexual people, among other sexual and gender identities.

In recognizing and celebrating LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, we hope to foster an inclusive, affirming, and brave community. Respect for differences is a defining characteristic of a college community, and we work toward erasing misconceptions, bigotry, and intolerance by heightening the awareness and understanding of these communities’ lives and experiences. Ramapo College of New Jersey proclaims June as National LGBTQIA+ Pride Month at Ramapo College of New Jersey, and we encourage our entire campus community to join us in celebrating.
