Partner with Us in Driving Community Impact

Every day, Northern New Jersey nonprofits do extraordinary work to uplift our communities, often with limited time, staffing, and technical resources. That’s where the DMC Center for Community Impact steps in. We team up with local mission-driven groups to provide the modern tech infrastructure and innovative tools they need to truly scale.

Through the DMC Community Impact Project, we bridge the gap between your organizational goals and student innovation. Nonprofits partner directly with talented Ramapo students to build capacity, smooth out operations, and design custom, data-driven tech solutions.

A True Win-Win Collaboration

Your organization gets the technical support to amplify real-world results and focus entirely on your core purpose. At the same time, Ramapo students step into the field to gain invaluable experience as next-generation leaders. Together, we are turning everyday operational challenges into measurable community triumphs.

If your organization is ready to harness the power of technology to expand your reach, we invite you to partner with us and accelerate your impact.

How the Partnership Works

  • Initial Consultation: Dr. Scott Frees (DMC Director) meets with you to understand your operational challenges and identify technology solutions that would create the most impact for your organization.
  • Project Design: DMC develops detailed project specifications based on your needs. We handle all technical planning and design work. We’ll create timelines and milestones and review the design with you.
  • Student Team Deployment: DMC hires interns from Computer Science, Data Science, and related programs to work on your project under close supervision. Students earn market-rate compensation and portfolio-worthy experience. Their compensation is paid from DMC Community Impact funds, not from your organization.
  • Deliverable & Training: You receive completed systems, training for your staff, and documentation. All systems are yours to own and use indefinitely.

We Handle the Heavy Lifting

  • Zero cost: RCNJ fundraising covers all project expenses, including intern stipends
  • No intern supervision needed: DMC faculty manage all student work
  • Minimal staff time: We gather details up front and respect your time
  • No technical expertise required: We translate your organizational challenges into solutions

Center for Food Action

Our partnership with the CFA (Center for Food Action) demonstrates the model in action. Five Ramapo students are delivering seven distinct technical solutions addressing CFA’s operational challenges:

  1. Time series analysis of inventory and donation patterns
  2. Automated inventory valuation tools using real-time pricing data
  3. Mobile scanning application for streamlined item categorization
  4. Guest demographic profiling and preference analysis
  5. Geographic visualization of mobile pantry deliveries and service gaps
  6. Integrated analytics platform staff can access from anywhere

These solutions help CFA serve 40,000+ people annually with greater efficiency and improved reporting to funders.

Pony Power

The DMC Center at Ramapo College is developing a data exploration portal for Pony Power Therapies, an equine-assisted services organization, to help them better understand their participant and program data. The tool allows staff to filter and visualize attendance information by semester, program type, demographics, and diagnosis – showing trends over time and mapping where participants come from geographically. It also helps Pony Power analyze their existing intake forms to identify patterns in how they collect information. This portal serves as a foundation for building better reporting tools that can support donor outreach, measure program impact, and identify growth opportunities for programming and research.

MEVO

The DMC Center at Ramapo College is developing an event management system for MEVO (Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization) to help them coordinate their community cleanup and trail maintenance events. The app allows volunteers to sign up for events and enables MEVO staff to track attendance in the field—clocking volunteers in and out so participants can receive credit for their community service hours. Staff can also record event outcomes like total pounds of garbage collected or number of tires removed, creating a complete record of MEVO’s environmental impact. The system makes it easy for MEVO to generate reports showing volunteer contributions and the measurable results of their cleanup efforts.

FAQs

Who is this partnership for, and how do we get started

The DMC Center for Community Impact partners primarily with mission-focused nonprofits in Northern New Jersey. To begin, propose a project by reaching out with your specific technical challenge (e.g., messy data, need for a mobile app, or mapping). The process starts with an initial consultation with Dr. Scott Frees to understand your operations and identify high-impact technology solutions.

What will this cost our organization?

There is zero cost to your nonprofit. RCNJ fundraising covers all project expenses, including market-rate stipends for student interns. This lets you direct your own resources toward serving the community.

How much time or technical expertise do we need to provide?

Very little. DMC faculty manage all student work—no intern supervision is required from you. The team gathers details up front, translates your organizational challenges into solutions, and minimizes your staff time. No technical expertise is needed, and you’ll receive training and documentation at handoff.

What deliverables do we receive, and who owns the results?

You receive professional-grade, fully functional systems tailored to your needs—such as databases, mobile apps, data dashboards, forecasting models, inventory systems, and GIS mapping tools—plus training and documentation. Your organization retains complete ownership of all intellectual property, data, and systems, and you receive ongoing support as part of DMC operations.

What kinds of problems can you solve? Any examples?

The DMC develops technology solutions for nonprofits by building custom tools that streamline operations and amplify impact. Examples include:

  • Center for Food Action: time-series analysis of inventory and donations, automated inventory valuation, a mobile scanning app, demographic and preference analysis, geographic visualization of service gaps, and an integrated analytics platform—helping serve 40,000+ people annually with improved efficiency and funder reporting.
  • Pony Power Therapies: a data exploration portal to filter and visualize attendance by semester, program, demographics, diagnosis, trends over time, and geographic origins; insights from intake forms to strengthen reporting, donor outreach, and program growth.
  • MEVO: an event management system for volunteer sign-ups, in-field attendance tracking, service-hour credit, outcome tracking (e.g., pounds of garbage collected, tires removed), and streamlined reporting of measurable community impact.
