MSDS Transitional Program

The MS in Data Science requires incoming students to have competence in basic computer programming, statistics, and linear algebra. While some students may have taken courses in these topics during their undergraduate studies, we recognize many returning students will need to acquire these skills prior to enrollment in MSDS courses. To meet this need, Ramapo College offers a Transitional program to prepare students for entry into MSDS.

Prospective students who do not have coursework in programming, statistics, and linear algebra should apply to the MSDS program. Applications will be reviewed, and students will receive a recommendation for which transitional coursework may be necessary for them to enroll in the MSDS coursework. Applicants may also schedule a meeting with the Program Director to discuss their situation in detail.

Transitional Computer Programming

Students who have not completed a college-level computer programming course, and have no relevant work experience in computer programming, may be required to complete one of the Transitional Computer Programming options. Students may complete any on of the options linked to below, and must notify the Program Director and Graduate Admissions of their plans.

Computer Programming Coursework Options

Completion of coursework at institutions not listed (2 or 4 year institutions) may also be considered. Students wishing to complete coursework at other institutions may submit course syllabi to the Program Director for review. Students should also note that while CMPS 130 and DATA 501 do not have prerequisites, courses offered at other institutions may have additional prerequisites. Students must check with the institution offering the course to determine their eligibility.

Transitional Statistics

Students who have not completed a college-level statistics course, and have no relevant work experience in statistics, may be required to complete one of the Transitional Statistics options. Students may complete any on of the options linked to below, and must notify the Program Director and Graduate Admissions of their plans.

Statistics Coursework Options

In addition to the options above, completion of coursework at institutions not listed (2 or 4 year institutions) may also be considered. Students wishing to complete coursework at other institutions may submit course syllabi to the Program Director for review. Students should also note that while DATA 502 does not have prerequisites, MATH 108 and PSYC 242 do require prerequisites / possible placement testing, and students must consult with the Program Director to determine eligibility. Courses offered at other institutions may have additional prerequisites. Students must check with the institution offering the course to determine their eligibility.

Transitional Linear Algebra

Students who have not completed a college-level linear algebra course, and have no relevant work experience in statistics, may be required to complete one of the Transitional Linear Algebra options. Students may complete any on of the options linked to below, and must notify the Program Director and Graduate Admissions of their plans.

Linear Algebra Coursework Options

Please note that many courses in engineering, science, and technical disciplines often cover the linear algebra topics required for the MSDS program. Please consult with the Program Director to determine if you have satisfied this prerequisite.

In addition to the options above, completion of coursework at institutions not listed (2 or 4 year institutions) may also be considered. Students wishing to complete coursework at other institutions may submit course syllabi to the Program Director for review. Students should also note that while DATA 503 does not have prerequisites, MATH 262 does require prerequisites and students must consult with the Program Director to determine eligibility. Courses offered at other institutions may have additional prerequisites as well. Students must check with the institution offering the course to determine their eligibility.
