About the Major

International Business graduates will find job opportunities in accounting, marketing, finance, and management with corporations engaged in international business activities. They may also find opportunities in government and education.  Students will also be prepared for graduate work in business or in liberal arts and language studies.

Each day the United States strengthens its economic ties to the global economy, making knowledge of international business essential in meeting the challenges and competition of the global marketplace. Fostering international understanding is central to a Ramapo College education and is also key in the International Business Program in order to prepare students for vital roles in our interconnected world.

The International Business major at Ramapo College is interdisciplinary by nature, uniquely combining specialized business skills with the liberal arts to broaden students’ perspectives and intellectual abilities. The liberal arts core for International Business majors includes fundamentals of international business, introduction to macroeconomics/microeconomics, language studies, and more advanced courses in international business. In addition, students select a concentration in one of the following business areas: management, accounting, finance, marketing, economics, or information technology. International Business majors can also focus their studies on a specific geographic area, such as Asia, Europe or Latin America.

Majors in International Business acquire the ability to analyze and understand global business operations and learn to appreciate the economic, political, and social climates of the world’s diverse regions. The program helps students develop a heightened awareness of countries’ changing socio-political landscapes, and in turn, how these affect global business.

Internships, study abroad opportunities and foreign language skills are extremely valuable aspects to the curriculum. Each student receives close personal advisement from a faculty member.

This major leads to a Bachelor of Arts in International Business. While the Program is based in the Anisfield School of Business, its multidisciplinary approach draws on faculty and courses from other schools of the college.

A minor in International Business is also available to students in other majors.

The International Business faculty includes specialists in a variety of business concentrations, as well as specialists in the liberal arts. Because many of the Program’s faculty have had broad experience in the business world, both in the United States and abroad, they are able to share both theoretical and practical perspectives of international business with their students; all of the faculty hold doctorate degrees.

Learning Goals and Outcomes for the International Business Major

Goal 1: Communication: Our students will demonstrate effective oral and written communication using appropriate current technology.

Outcome 1: Students will deliver well prepared oral presentations.

Outcome 2: Students will compose well written business documents.

Goal 2: Ethics: Our students will consider the moral implications of business actions and processes, and propose ethically sound solutions.

Outcome 1: Students will detect ethical dilemmas and offer potential alternatives and solutions.

Goal 3: Foundation: Our students will have a broad-based knowledge in the functional areas of business.

Outcome 1: Students will comprehend principles and practices in key business disciplines.

Goal 4: Perspectives: Our students will consider diverse points of view and apply them towards issue resolution.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to identify and analyze different points of view when seeking to resolve business-related issues.

Goal 5: Reasoning: Our students will be critical thinkers and decision makers able to use qualitative and quantitative methods.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to identify and analyze problems and opportunities, generate alternatives, and recognize appropriate solutions.

Goal 6: Comprehensive Knowledge in the Discipline:  Perspectives – Our students will learn to appreciate the diversity in economic, political and social environments that are found across countries/regions.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to recognize the variety of socio-political and economic environments across countries/regions and will use this to analyze global business operations.

Requirements of the Major
  1. Transfer students who have 48 or more credits accepted at the time of transfer are waived from the courses marked with a (W) below.  Waivers do not apply to Major Requirements.
  2. Double counting between General Education, School Core, and Major may be possible.  Check with your advisor to see if any apply.
  3. Writing Intensive Requirement (two general education courses and participation in the ASB Business Writing Across the Curriculum (BWAC) program):  two writing intensive courses in the general education curriculum are required: Critical Reading and Writing and Studies in the Arts and Humanities; the rest of the Writing Intensive Requirement is met by participation in the ASB BWAC program.
  4. Not all courses are offered each semester.  Please check the current Schedule of Classes for semester course offerings.
  5. The Career Pathways Program requirements must be completed prior to graduation.  Visit the Cahill Career Center/ASB Office.



Note: Some required courses in school cores and majors also satisfy certain General Education categories. Check with your advisor to see which courses may fulfill more than requirement. Double majors within the ASB are not permitted, except for Economics. Students who have a primary major offered from a school other than ASB and are contemplating a second major within the ASB must consult an ASB advisor for guidelines. A 2.0 GPA in the major is required for graduation, which includes ASB core requirements and upper level major requirements.

Requirements of the Minor
  1. At least 1/2 of the courses fulfilling a minor must be distinct from the student’s major. That is, three of the five courses required for a minor cannot be used towards fulfillment of major requirements. A school core does not need to be completed for a minor. Minors are open to students regardless of school affiliation.
