Ramapo College has been operating study abroad programs in India since 2002. Currently, we are offering the following program opportunities:

Why India?

Gain an insider’s view of the world’s largest democracy and second fastest growing economy, while earning 16 credits towards your degree.

Nothing looks better on your resume than the unique experience of living and learning in an emerging global power.

Affordable. The India Semester program costs approximately the same as a residential semester at Ramapo College, and there are scholarships available.


Academic Program


The program is designed to program students of many disciplines the opportunity to participate in this program and meet their academic requirements. The academic program is designed as follows:

Required Courses:

  • Indian Culture & Society (INTD 201)
  • Field Research Project (INTD 409)

Additional Courses (pick 1):

  • Sustainable Development in India (INTD 231)
  • Global Indian Media & Culture (COMM 357)

Additional Courses (pick 1):

  • Human Rights in India (INTD 303)
  • Micro-Enterprise in South India: From the Bottom of the Pyramid (INTD 321)

Field Excursions

Each course includes local and one extended excursion throughout South India. Previous excursions have included:

  • Mysore Palace
  • Nagarhole Forest
  • Pondicherry
  • Art of Living Ashram
  • and more…



Students will live in double or triple rooms, each with a desks, dressers and bathroom. Laundry service is available (at a fee) and wi-fi is generally available at all times. At the Fireflies Intercultural Centre, there is also a library, classrooms, multiple dining facilities, sculpture gardens, and much more.

4 credits, 6 weeks – ‘Culture & Sustainability’

Academic Course: Grassroots Communities in South India (INTD 299)

This program begins with a preparatory component in New Jersey, followed by 3 weeks in India. In India, students will participate in three course modules: Social & Cultural Issues; Sustainability in India; and Human Rights Movements. Each module will include lectures, excursions and a service learning component.
