Ramapo College Offers Active Shooter Training Sessions

Ramapo College cares for the safety of students, staff, and bystanders. To ensure the procedure is met the school offers a training session designed to prepare the campus community for emergency situations, including active shooter incidents. These sessions educate participants on the Run, Hide, Fight protocol, situational awareness, communication procedures, and how to respond effectively when law enforcement arrives.

Active Shooter Response

During an active shooting it’s vital to know the procedure, respond quickly and calmly to protect yourself and those around you. The most recognizable options to consider are Run, Hide, and Fight

Options to Consider

Run: Running person png

  • Identify the location(s) of the threat;
  • Assess your situation to plan an escape route;
  • Quickly escape via doors, stairs, windows, etc.;
  • Leave belongings behind;
  • Keep running until you reach a safe area.

Hide:

  • Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view;
  • Block entry to hiding places and lock doors;
  • Turn off lights and close window blinds;
  • Silence mobile devices and stay quiet;
  • Remain vigilant and assess your options.

Fight:Fighting person png

  • If confronted, fight for your life;
  • Search for objects to use as weapons;
  • Commit to decisive and aggressive action;
  • Fight until the threat is neutralized.

If you can, call or tex 9-1-1

When law enforcement arrives, their goal is to neutralize the threat!                                       

  • Remain calm and avoid pointing, screaming or yelling;
  • Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, cell phone);
  • Keep hands up, open, and visible at all times;
  • Avoid quick movements toward officers such as holding on to them for safety;
  • Follow responders’ instructions when evacuating.

Remain vigilant, consider your options, and stay safe!

  • Pay attention to emergency alerts and notifications;
  • Report suspicious activity and individuals;
  • Identify the two nearest exits in any facility you visit;
  • Help others if you are able to do so safely;
  • If you are in a secure location, stay there until law enforcement clears the area.
