Ramapo College of New Jersey truly prepares students for all aspects of life. Ramapo Alum Mike Gibney ‘18 chose to step out of his comfort zone and into reality television, as one of the stars of Love is Blind Season 10.
Each season of the show is set in a different city, where local singles – like Gibney – are scouted to participate. The show serves as a social experiment encouraging deeper connections between cast members by having them communicate without seeing each other until they get engaged over a two-week span. The couples then put this connection to the test by living together and seeing if they are truly compatible.
As Gibney navigated life and a romance in Cleveland, Ohio with fellow season 10 star Emma Betsinger, he was able to step out of his daily life as a sales manager. While the experience was certainly nontraditional, the show provided Gibney with an excellent opportunity to challenge himself and grow – much like a Ramapo education.
Gibney – who earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law and Society from Ramapo – sat down for a Q&A to reminisce about his time as a Roadrunner, how he ended up looking for love on the hit Netflix show, and what he learned from both experiences. (If you are interested in watching Gibney’s journey unfold on screen, you can view the latest season of Love is Blind on Netflix.)
Can you tell me about your time on Love is Blind?
Love is Blind was an amazing experience! I had just packed up and moved to Ohio. I had no friends or family here and it was tough to navigate. I took the time to really learn about myself and then Love is Blind came knocking! For me being able to blindly date women and base such a strong connection on communication was something I have never done before. Love is Blind offered me a new perspective on dating and marriage.
How did you end up on the show?
After moving to Ohio, a recruiter reached out via Instagram and asked if I was single and interested. I was ready to potentially meet my future wife! Something was calling me to Ohio, was it her?
Did you ever think you’d end up being on a show like this while you were at Ramapo?
No, I always wanted to be an actor or voice actor, but never seriously considered TV. It was always more of a distant childhood dream.
Did you live on campus at Ramapo? How did that compare to your living situation on Love is Blind?
I was a commuter, but I did stay with friends a ton in Mackin Hall, Overlook, then the Elm apartments … I think living with a woman in your late 20s is different than college guys!
How did Ramapo help prepare you for the workforce and your current life?
Ramapo did a great job of making me think outside the box. From challenging views in class lectures to assignments that forced you into a different mindset. I really think the college prepares their students to welcome the outside world and how to navigate it using analytical and open-minded approaches. I use this every day in my current job and in new relationships I’ve made here in Cleveland, Ohio.
Who was your favorite Ramapo professor and why?
My favorite professor is Dr. Mihaela Serban. Her classes were very entertaining. She engaged the class and made us think in ways we normally wouldn’t. She made class fun while learning.
What were you involved with on campus?
I did not join any Greek life and wasn’t fully involved in the campus activities. If I wasn’t in class, I was in friends’ dorms hanging out or at the Bradley Center.
What is a memory that stands out to you from your time at Ramapo?
A memory that stands out to me is playing basketball at the Bradley Center or ping pong with my friends.
Why did you choose Ramapo?
I chose Ramapo because it has such a beautiful campus. The small class sizes and walkable campus made it easy to love. I originally was selected to play basketball for the Roadrunners but I quit my freshman year. Basketball was my first love throughout high school and I chose Ramapo on the idea I was going to play there.
Are there any lessons you learned at Ramapo that have stuck with you past graduation?
Stay in school and learn as much as you can, stay open minded … we must always stay willing to learn.
What do you love most about Ramapo?
I loved the nature and campus layout the most. The Arch is iconic!
