[ASB-221] Dr. Nazan Haydari, Associate Professor of Media School at İstanbul Bilgi University. This presentation draws from contested terrain of social media during the Gezi Park protests and the recent coup attempt to explore the complex relationship between media, participation, and citizenship. Dr. Haydari argues that the possibilities and limitations of social media as a space of representation and citizenship in Turkey can be contextually comprehended in relation to various parameters including historically state-centric approaches to media, silenced histories and histories of silencing, diversifying forms of civil society organizations and social movements, media ownership, and significance of interpersonal communication and social networking.
