Diverse Issues in Higher Education: Professor David Oh Examines Asian American Representation Across Media

Dr. David Oh, professor of communication arts, spoke with Diverse Issues in Higher Education about his research on Asian American representation. In his interview, Oh touched upon the underrepresentation of Asians in film, TV, and music, as well as how different populations view Korean media. “K-pop (Korean popular music) tends to have a higher percentage of queer fans because its representation of masculinity is interpreted in the West as more ambiguous and fluid than Western notions of masculinity, even if this isn’t exactly what it means in South Korea,” Oh explained.
