The MALS program was the first graduate program at Ramapo College. It began in January 1995 with twenty-six students, after 5 years of planning and with a focus on interdisciplinarity the liberal arts. Those who have served as Directors are: Dr. Sydney Weinberg (1995–2002), Dr. Mark Howenstein (2003–2004), Dr. Anthony T. Padovano (2004–present).
A massive review of the graduate program was undertaken a decade after its inception by the current Director. Deans, directors, faculty and administrators were interviewed; interrogatories were sent to every graduate, all current students and all faculty who have taught in the program. The effort to create a new structure was influenced by the insights and suggestions that this comprehensive survey produced.
This restructuring resulted in a program that suits the individual educational needs of its students, with more flexibility and sharper focus. The original four core courses were reduced the three, allowing one additional elective. A thesis became obligatory for all graduates. These three requirements (core courses, electives, thesis) call for different learning responses. A Credential of Concentration feature was added for students who complete 40% of the program in a specific area.
Each student makes a public presentation of the thesis at a MALS reception held each semester.
MALS students are encouraged to submit papers for consideration at academic conferences and a number have been accepted. MALS students have also had their papers for published in the MALS national journal, Confluence. In June, 2010, the first MALS National Conference was held at Georgetown University, with two MALS students from Ramapo College delivering academic papers.
