MAHWAH, NJ – On March 30, 2015, The Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies hosted a screening of the Sundance award-winning documentary, Watchers of the Sky. Elizabeth Bohart, executive producer and Director of Outreach for the film, introduced and led a discussion.

Watchers of the Sky is a powerful feature documentary that exposes the uncanny parallels of genocides across time and culture. Uniquely, Watchers of the Sky tells the stories of five remarkable people who are trying to end the international community’s political paralysis and make “never again” a reality. These individuals’ actions and choices demonstrate that people can effectively challenge the axiom that nothing can be done to end genocide.

Featured in the film are:

  • Raphael Lemkin — the man who created the word ‘genocide’ and first brought the world’s attention to the moral imperative of addressing it.
  • Emmanuel Uvvueukun — a Rwandan aid worker and genocide survivor who runs three refugee camps housing Darfuri refugees in Chad.
  • Benjamin Ferencz — at 90, one of the last surviving prosecutors from the Nuremberg Trials, who will not be silenced as he persistently persuades delegates at the United Nations to take action.
  • Luis Moreno-Ocampo — Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, who began proceedings against the Sudanese Government on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
  • Samantha Power — author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning examination of genocide A Problem From Hell, whose insightful and articulate voice ties together these disparate stories to connect the events in Sudan with the unfulfilled legacy of Raphael Lemkin.

BohartExecutive Producer Elizabeth Bohart’s involvement extends beyond the film to its audience engagement and outreach program. She oversaw the development of the film’s educational outreach materials, including its middle and high school curriculum. of Watchers of the Sky. Bohart has also worked as a strategy consultant whose work has focused on creating business plans for nonprofit and for-profit entities in developing countries. She was the founding board chair of Maloto, a U.S.-based organization dedicated to developing programs for underserved youth in northern Malawi. She is also on the board of Komera, a leadership incubator for Rwandan girls. She lives in New York City with her husband and three daughters.
