Rabbi Rubin has continued the work of his grandfather and namesake leading in Geder Avos, an organization which aims to restore and preserve Jewish cemeteries across Central and Eastern Europe, which suffered grievous destruction and neglect during the Holocaust and through decades of Communist Party rule. His talk will begin with a discussion of his grandfather’s life, legacy, and unique thought, all of which informed his work on Jewish cemeteries. Rabbi Moshe Yosef Rubin was born in Bukovina in 1895 to the future Hassidic Rebbe of Siret, Rabbi Mendel Rubin, and his wife Beila (née Horowitz). From 1922-1940 Rabbi Rubin served as Chief Rabbi of Campulung and from 1941 to 1946 as the President of the Rabbinical Council and Chairman of Agudath Israel in Romania. He founded the World Center of European Rabbis after WWII and, in 1962, an organization called Geder Avos. The second half of Rabbi Rubin’s talk will focus on the fascinating history of Geder Avos, including its recent and ongoing successes, under his grandfather’s leadership and his own.Flier with event description, a picture of cemetery gates, and a picture of the speaker
