MAHWAH, N.J. – Dr. Tibi Galis, Executive Director of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, discussed “Making Atrocity Prevention a Reality” in September at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Held under the auspices of the Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, the talk was attended by 40 students, faculty and community members.

Dr. Galis explored building awareness of both genocide and mass atrocities and current efforts, including by his organization, to enhance the world’s ability to prevent and respond to such tragedies. In particular, he elaborated on the trend around the world in which states are, in recognition of the complex nature of atrocity crimes, adopting a multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder approach to prevention. It is an approach that the Auschwitz Institute has found particularly fruitful in eliciting buy-in to their programs among mid-level public officials in countries in danger of succumbing to ethnic and sectarian discord.

Galis has been the Executive Director of AIPR since 2006. Born and raised in Romania, he earned his B.A. in Law and Political Science from Babes-Bolyai University, in Cluj-Napoca. He received an M.A. in International Politics and Political Development from the University of Manchester, and earned a Ph.D. from the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University, with a focus on transitional justice. Previously, Galis worked as an associate researcher for the UK Parliament, helping develop the UK position on the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and as rapporteur for the Swedish government at the 2004 Stockholm International Forum on the Prevention of Genocide
