Civic & Community Engagement Center (CCEC)

President's Letter

Dear Friends,

By now, we are all aware of the devastation, injury and loss of life in the Philippines wrought by Typhoon Haiyan.

Ramapo’s thoughtful and generous responses to past disasters have yielded support to residents of Haiti, New Orleans, and Indonesia.

For the duration of this semester and into next semester, the Filipino American Student Association (FASA), the United Asian Association (UAA), the Human Rights Society, Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, and Sigma Iota Rho Honors Society are partnering with the Civic and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) to coordinate a College-wide response to this disaster.

In order to maximize Ramapo’s impact and to achieve the best results possible for those in need of clean water, food, shelter and other necessities, these organizations will seek donations during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 18th through November 22nd).

What is most needed at present is financial support. We have been advised that donations of supplies will cause more harm than good at this point as airports in the region have been heavily damaged and cannot receive air traffic. Also, resources are not yet in place for aid workers to sort through donated goods like food and clothing. Aid workers and others are doing their best to deliver immediate necessities like water, food, medicine, and temporary shelters.

If you have fundraising or other ideas to support the residents of the Philippines, please share them via ccec@ramapo.edu or by phone at 201-684-7586.

Thank you.

Peter P. Mercer
President
