Mytelka, Herman D. Memorial Scholarship

Arnold Mytelka was chairman of the Ramapo College Board of Trustees from 1979-1980. Both of Mr. Mytelka’s parents were educators in the Jersey City public school system; his mother taught seventh and eighth grade English and his father was a math teacher and former principal of Dickinson High School. Herman Mytelka also taught at James J. Ferris High School in Jersey City.

Arnold Mytelka established a scholarship at Ramapo in his mother’s memory in 1983 and created this award in memory of his father in 2006. The Herman Mytelka Scholarship recognizes entering Ramapo College freshmen from any public high school in Jersey City, with preference given to students from Dickinson High School.

  • Preference given to students from Dickinson High School, however any entering freshmen from any public high school in Jersey City will be considered
  • Merit and financial need will be considered
  • Selected by the Office of Admissions

This scholarship is not awarded through the application process.

Jason Mercado

“College is truly an amazing experience, and I plan to enjoy every minute of it,” says Jason Mercado of Jersey City, N.J., a freshman studying Engineering Physics. He currently runs for the Varsity Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field Team.  In addition to becoming a successful engineer, he also hopes to become a professional runner one day.


2019 Recipient

Brianna White

“Since I am a freshman, I am not yet involved as I want to be. I entered Ramapo reserved and shy, but I hope to become more involved in community service and work study,” says Biology major Brianna White of Jersey City, N.J.

Brianna has been active in the Black Student Union on campus. Brianna has also been involved in an off-campus organization in her hometown, New City Kids, where she tutored young children and helped them with homework. She served as a “reading buddy” to first through fourth graders by challenging them to read books beyond their reading level.  Brianna’s encouragement and incentives to assist them in accomplishing their goals were well recognized.

She has a GPA of 3.3.

 



2017 Recipients

Felicia Jimenez

As a student athlete, Felicia Jimenez was part of the Ramapo Volleyball team’s historic NCAA National bid. She managed to play on the team, helped them make it to Nationals and pass the first round, all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA.  “I plan to carry on this tradition of combining academics with athletics after graduation as I pursue a career as a physical therapist for either a major league sports team or as a personal physical therapist for professional athletes,” she says.

Felicia has also been involved in Digs Volleyball Club as an assistant coach and works with their 14 year old and under first team.  She has helped lead them to second place in two tournaments and the top 50% in a large tournament in Washington D.C.

She is a Biology major on the Physical Therapy track.  Felicia is from Jersey City, NJ.


Philip Nguyen

Nursing student Philip Nguyen is from Jersey City, NJ and aspires to become a well-respected nurse in an OR hospital setting and become a source of pride for his family. He currently has a 3.35 GPA.

Philip is active in several organizations on campus including the Fusion Dance Crew, where he is Assistant Secretary, the United Asian Association where he serves as Public Affairs officer, as well as the Kickboxing Club.

“Despite having such a busy schedule, one of my largest goals in life is to travel. This summer, I hope to travel to Ghana, Africa to attend a study abroad seminar for nursing students.”

Bria Beaufort

Bria Beaufort is from Bayonne, NJ and is a senior majoring in Law and Society. She graduated from High Tech High School in Jersey City where she was a member of the French Club, the French newsletter and French Theater, and her French teacher nominated her to receive a USAA International Foreign Award for her academic excellence. At Ramapo, Bria has earned a 3.53 grade point average. She plans to continue her education in law school.


2013 Recipient

Jack Nesmith

Jack Nesmith of Jersey City, NJ is a Psychology major. He is a resident assistant for Laurel Hall, a peer facilitator and involved with Real Men of Ramapo Calendar. Jack serves as secretary of Rho Alpha Sigma Honor Society for Resident Assistants and was included into the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society for Student Leaders. He plans to pursue a master’s degree and would like to be a counselor in a Student Affairs division of a college. In graduate school, he plans to explore goals toward improving society and becoming a mentor. “My goal is to help students find their passions in life and, as a professional, influence the next generation of student leaders,” he said. He said this scholarship helps him, “focus on getting my degree and joining the environmental movement to protect our planet.” Jack has a 3.09 grade point average.



2012 Recipient

Gira Patel

Gira Patel graduated from William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City in 2009. She enrolled at Ramapo and is currently a junior majoring in Environmental Science. She has earned a 2.53 grade point average.

2011 Recipient

Karla Radu

Karla Radu is from Jersey City, NJ and is a graduate of McNair Academic High School. The freshman is a Literature major who plans to pursue teacher certification. Her interests include painting and sketching, writing poetry and expanding her eclectic knowledge of rock, metal, oldies, jazz and psychedelic trance music. The scholarship, says Karla, gives her “great drive to succeed and exceed expectations.”

The scholarship will help me financially and also give me incentive to do well in school so I may to reap the benefits of my hard work and learning in the future.


2010 Recipient

Julissa Candelario

Julissa Candelario is in Ramapo’s undergraduate nursing program. Julissa works as a student aide in the Educational Opportunity Fund office on campus. She has been involved in a number of community service activities while at Ramapo, including Strengthen Our Sisters and Palisades Medical Center, among others. Julissa is a member of the Nursing Student Association and Omega Phi Chi sorority, where she is currently serving as president. She has earned a 2.77 grade point average. “I plan to give back to the community by working as a nurse, preferably at an inner-city hospital,” Julissa says. “Then further my education and pursue a doctorate in nursing practice.”

Richard McAdams

Richard McAdams is a freshman from Jersey City, New Jersey where he graduated from McNair Academic High School. He played the saxophone and the oboe in his high school’s jazz band, and participated in the musical program Little Shop of Horrors. He has taught himself to play the electric and string bass guitar. At Ramapo Richard is enrolled in the School of Contemporary Arts and has a 2.90 grade point average.
