Thomases, Fred and Florence Scholarship

Ramapo College benefited from the foresight and commitment of two long- time Bergen County residents, Fred and Florence Thomases. Mrs. Thomases was a member of the founding Ramapo College Board of Trustees, entrusted with the mission of creating Ramapo College and finding it a home.

Fred Thomases was a textile industry executive, internationally known for his innovations. He was a leader in the community, serving as a trustee of Temple Emanu-El in Englewood, the New Jersey Jewish Community Center on the Palisades in Tenafly, and as a National Board Member of American ORT, an international Jewish organization focused on technological and vocational education. Mr. Thomases died in 2000 and his wife 11 years later, but through this scholarship they leave a legacy of their commitment to education.

Emily Brackenbury

Emily Brackenbury of Oakland, N.J. is a Literature major, Spanish Language Studies minor, and is pursuing her secondary teaching certificate. She has a GPA of 3.9 and is a proud member of various leadership and honors societies on campus.

At Ramapo, Emily has been an active member of the college community, such as being a member of the Ramapo Honors College, Residence Life as both an RA and SARD, and the Center for Reading and Writing as a writing consultant.

Emily has also been involved in off-campus activities, as this year she serves as a substitute teacher in local schools and works towards completing her student teaching at Indian Hills High School.

After graduation, Emily hopes to find a position as a high school English teacher in a local school district, and she is considering continuing her education and pursuing a master’s degree

2022 Recipients

Malik Moore

Malik Moore of Burlington, N.J. is a Spanish Language Studies major in the Teacher Education Program. He has a 3.7 GPA. After graduation, Malik plans to become a Spanish teacher.

At Ramapo, Malik has been active in several organizations and activities, including the Black Student Union and ASL Club. In these clubs, Malik learns more about different ways to promote diversity and inclusion in his community.

Malik has also been involved in off-campus activities and organizations, including working as a volunteer math tutor for the Grupo Cajolá, which involved teaching math to Guatemalans without access to a good education system.

Bobby Ciarletta

Bobby Ciarletta of Park Ridge, N.J. is a sophomore Elementary Education major with a Museum Studies minor. He has a 4.0 GPA.

Bobby is on the Ramapo tennis team, and is part of the Honors Program. He also serves as secretary of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

He holds a student-faculty research position with the Mahwah Museum, conducts research with the N.J. Council for Social Studies, and volunteers for the Bergen County Historical Society.

“I look forward to working in the education world and helping young people to enjoy learning.”


Rianna Di Jesus

After graduation, Rianna Di Jesus hopes to earn a master’s degree and become a therapist, school counselor, or elementary school teacher.

Rianna is a junior Psychology major, has a 4.0 GPA and has made the Dean’s List every semester. She has also been accepted into the Alpha Lambda Delta and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies.

At Ramapo, Rianna currently serves as Vice President of the Debate Club and a member of the Honors Program’s Student Executive Board. In past years, she has been involved in both Leaders in Service and Sophomores Advancing in Leadership.

 


Katherine Nekrassova

Katherine Nekrassova of Middletown, N.J. is a Junior Nursing major. She has a 3.52 GPA, and is a member of the Ramapo College Honors Program. She is a consecutive Dean’s scholar recipient throughout her tenure at Ramapo.

She has been active in the Nursing Student Organization, Relay for Life/Students Against Cancer, and the Women’s Center. Katherine volunteers at several local hospitals and has improved her multicultural and psychosocial skills through seminars and individual research.

Katherine spends her free time pursuing art and hopes to continue to do so on a greater level in later life. After graduation, she hopes to care for at-risk psychiatric populations and continue to pursue her education.



2020 Recipients

Natalie Chung

Natalie Chung of Wayne, N.J. is a sophomore Biology major with a Physics minor. In pursuit of becoming a radiologist, she is currently involved in a 7-year medical program affiliated with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Natalie has been involved in biology research at Ramapo, and in the summer of 2019, she interned at the Lerner Research Institute.  In addition to her passion for science, she enjoys coaching her local competitive swim team.


Ashley Francis

Ashley Francis is a Psychology major/Music minor. She has a 3.7 GPA and has been on the Dean’s List each year since her freshman year.

Ashley is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Association of Latinos Moving Ahead, and the Peer Facilitation program, where she assists first-year students become accustomed to college.

Her long term goal is to attend graduate school and become a Child Psychologist.

Dahiana Arenas

“I hope to one day utilize my medical background and love of traveling to become a Nurse Practitioner, connecting with and caring for individuals all over the world,” says Nursing major Dahiana Arenas of Oakland, N.J. Through Ramapo’s Civic and Community Engagement Center, she has participated in several alternative break trips including Ghana, Costa Rica, and India. She has also conducted research and shadowed medical personnel in China.

At Ramapo, Dahiana is part of the Honors Program, Commuter Affairs, the ENHANCE Mentorship program, and Alpha Omicron Pi Women’s Fraternity. Dahiana serves on the Honors Program’s Executive Board and is also the president of Phi Beta Delta. In the past, Dahiana has been an active participant in her Leaders in Service and Sophomores Advancing in Leadership (SAIL) cohorts. She has been a Peer Mentor for Leaders in Service program participants, commuter students, and ENHANCE members.

She was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Beta Delta, and Order of Omega honor societies, and she has been on the Dean’s List every semester. Off campus, Dahiana is a part-time, certified Pharmacy Technician for Walgreens.



2019 Recipients

Samuel Anklowitz

Samuel Anklowitz of West Windsor, N.J. is majoring in Information Technology Management with a minor in Mathematics. He has a 4.0 GPA and has made the Dean’s List every semester.

At Ramapo, Samuel has served as Music Manager for Ramapo College Radio WRPR, where he ensures there is never dead air on Ramapo’s air waves.  He is also the Programming Coordinator for the Residence Hall Association, where he plans events for all the College’s residents.

After his time at Ramapo, Samuel is looking forward to attending graduate school to earn a Master’s in Business Administration.

Miah Gomez

Miah Gomez is a Communication Arts major with a concentration in Digital Filmmaking and a minor in Spanish Language Studies. She holds a 3.8 GPA and was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year students

Miah is a proud participant in one of the International Student Exchange programs offered at Ramapo College. At the NATUWA Sanctuary in Costa Rica, she helped feed and care for wildlife.

“I plan to use my degree to create videos in the music industry, but I’m eager to continue learning and try different routes on my journey towards success,” Miah says.


Jared Berberabe

Jared Berberabe of Ringoes, N.J. is a freshman Literature major with a concentration in Creative Writing. He has a 4.0 GPA and made the Dean’s List for the Fall 2018 Semester. He was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and recently joined the Honors Program.

Jared hones his craft by frequently and diligently writing. He has written several short stories, as well as a full novel, which he is in the process of editing.  He holds a summer job at Health Quest. “I hope that, through interning with a publishing company, I can make a connection with a place that could publish what I write,” he says.

In his free time, Jared enjoys reading, writing, and going to the gym. He also runs a small blog which features some of his written works.

Jeffrey Hofmann

Jeffrey Hofmann of Franklin Lakes, N.J. is a senior Literature major with a History minor. He has a 4.0 GPA and has been on the Dean’s List each semester. “These are among my proudest achievements at Ramapo thus far.”

Beyond the classroom, he remains active in his study of literature. While attending the Readings at Ramapo events on campus, he is eager to learn from both professional authors and his fellow peers. In his final semester, Jeffrey is looking forward to further explore the extra-curricular literary opportunities on campus. “I am very passionate about both curation and literature, and hope to continue building a career that utilizes both of these passions.”

Jeffrey has a part-time job at the Ramsey Public Library, and in his free time, he enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with his friends.


Matthew Reber

Matthew Reber of Ridgefield Park, N.J. is a Finance major with a Mathematics minor. He has a 4.0 GPA.

At Ramapo, Matthew is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Matthew has also been involved in off-campus activities and organizations, including tutoring at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Teaneck and as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Jersey. He is also currently an intern at Intac Actuarial Services, a pension advisory firm that helps small businesses achieve tax saving and investing goals.

Matthew will be interning at PwC in the summer of 2019, and his career goal is be an actuary. “My goal for the future is to help individuals and businesses achieve their goals of financial planning and saving for retirement.”



2018 Recipients

Holly Gorin

Holly Gorin of Allendale, N.J. is a Biology major with a concentration in Physical Therapy . She has a 4.0 GPA and is on the Dean’s List. She was recently accepted into the Rutgers Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

At Ramapo, Holly tutors students registered with the Office of Specialized Services and works as a writing consultant at The Center for Reading and Writing.

She works as a paraprofessional at Children’s Therapy Center Academy.

 

Jeffrey Hoffmann

Jeffrey Hoffmann of Franklin Lakes, N.J. is a junior Literature major. He has a 4.0 GPA and has been included on the Dean’s List for each of his five semesters. “Earning a 4.0 and being on the Dean’s List are among my proudest achievements at Ramapo thus far.”

Kellie Jadus

“I hope in the future to be able to contribute to students in the way my donor has,” says Kellie Jadus of Old Bridge, N.J. Kellie is a Nursing major with a minor in Psychology. She has a 4.0 GPA and has made the Dean’s List each semester she has attended Ramapo.

She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, the Golden Key National Honor Society, and the Yoga Club.

She hopes to work in the NICU and eventually become a neonatal nurse practitioner.

Sean Corbley

Sean Corbley is a History major in the School of Humanities and Global Studies.  He is also working towards his Teaching Certification in Social Studies.

Stefanie Sciacca

Biology major Stefanie Sciacca is currently on exchange through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program in Hawaii, taking classes in marine mammals and coral reef biology. “I’m working on several exciting research projects that I’m eager to share with my peers and professors when I return to Ramapo in the fall,” she says.

Stefanie is part of the College Honors Program and took on the leadership role of Pledge Educator in Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.  She has also presented a recent scholarly article to her peers and professors as part of a research project alongside her professor, Dr. Thomas Owen.

She has also been involved off campus in Big Brothers Big Sisters where she acted as a mentor to a child in need, and Mahwah EMS where she serves as a volunteer probationary member.

Stefanie plans to attend medical school after she graduates from Ramapo.  She is from Pittstown, NJ and has earned a 3.44 GPA.

Paige Boivin

Paige Boivin of Wyckoff, NJ is a Literature major. She has a 3.5 GPA and has made the Dean’s List during most of her semesters at Ramapo. Paige has also worked full time as an Assistant Manager at Payless Shoesource while attending Ramapo.

Denise Zhu

Denise Zhu is a Business Administration Major with a concentration in Marketing.  She is pursuing a minor  in Visual Arts.



2016 Recipients

Rebecca King

Rebecca King of Hammonton, NJ is a Communication Arts major with a concentration in Journalism and a minor in Literature and Theater. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the Communications Honor Society.

At Ramapo, Rebecca is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Ramapo News, where she began as a staff writer before becoming the Arts and Entertainment editor and then, in her junior year, the news editor.  Rebecca has also worked for the Center for Student Involvement for three years and is currently the student manager of Roadrunner Central.

In conjunction with her major, Rebecca recently completed a semester-long internship with SDC Journal. In her sophomore year she studied abroad for a semester in London, where she furthered her education in both journalism and theater.


Mindy Gorin

Mindy Gorin of Allendale, NJ is a Communications and Social Science double major with concentrations in Writing and Gender Studies. She has a 3.98 GPA. She was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta First Year Honor Society and Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society.

At Ramapo, Mindy has been active in several organizations and activities, including the Honors Program and the Center for Reading and Writing.

She works off campus as a freelance writer for TAPInto.net and is the editor-in-chief for the Odyssey at Ramapo.


Steven Hofmann

Steven Hofmann of Franklin Lakes, NJ is an Engineering Physics major with a Mathematics minor. He has a 4.0 GPA. Steven was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

At Ramapo, Steven is a member of the Engineering Physics Club.

Steven has also been involved in off-campus activities, including tutoring a student in his neighborhood in mathematics and science.


Kevin Ng

Kevin Ng of Oradell, NJ is a Mathematics major with a minor in Economics and Teacher Certification.  He has a 3.99 GPA and was inducted into the Pi Mu Epsilon Math, Kappa Delta Pi Teacher Education, and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Societies.

At Ramapo, Kevin has been active in several organizations, including SGA, Peer Facilitation, and Fed Challenge. Last year, Kevin served as the Student Trustee and Captain of the Fed Challenge Team.

Off campus, Kevin has served as the Vice President of Statistics and Analytics for the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League.

Steven Hofmann of Franklin Lakes, N.J., is an engineering physics major and a mathematics minor. He has a 4.0 grade point average.

At Ramapo, Steven is a member of the Engineering Physics Club. Off campus, he tutors students in science and mathematics.

Steven is unsure of his career plans but would like to pursue one that supports his enjoyment of physics and mathematics. He is interested in mechanical engineering.


Hazel Magbitang

Hazel Magbitang of Parsippany, N.J., is a nursing major with minors in psychology and biology. She has a 4.0 grade point average.
At Ramapo, Hazel is vice president of public relations for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and the Golden Key International Honour Society. She is a lab tutor for anatomy and physiology. Hazel volunteers at a hospital in her spare time.
Hazel would like to become an ICU nurse and return to school to become a CRNA.



2014 Recipients

Allan Wiener

Allan Wiener of Fair Lawn, NJ is a Computer Science major with a 3.95 grade point average. He
plans to minor in Mathematics. He serves as treasurer of the Computer and Technology Club. Allan conducts research with Professor Amruth Kumar on the Problets Project, an on-going research project to develop intelligent tutors for programming concepts. It has been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation. Post-graduation, Allan plans to work in the computer science field and possible attend graduate school. He said he realizes the importance Ramapo puts on academic success. “Receiving the scholarship gives me the freedom to pursue my future plans. I am grateful for this opportunity.”


David Choina

David Choina is a graduate of Bergen County Technical High School where he ran cross country and was a member of the Social Concerns Club. He worked at an automotive shop as part of a Senior Experience Internship program. In addition to the challenging curriculum of Bergen County Tech, David attended a Polish culture and language school. At Ramapo, David is majoring in Accounting and has a 3.91 grade point average.

Maria Poznahovska of Lawrenceville, NJ was described by her guidance counselor as the type of student who wishes to “do it all.” Maria was born in Russia and speaks four languages: English, Russian, Ukrainian and French. She also can read and understand Polish. Maria is proud of her achievement of completing AP Literature and Composition. She is active in the French Club and French Honor Society and was awarded the school’s Par Excellence Award several times. The award is given to students who have shown effort, determination and interest in the French language. Maria was a member of the L.E.A.D. program to mentor freshmen, the Academic League and the Book Club. She also tutored middle school students in Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, English and French. Maria enjoys playing the piano, painting, drawing, cooking and baking. She’s held several part-time jobs that expanded her experience in the food and retail industries and personal service businesses. Maria has a 3.92 grade point average.

Brenda Slazyk

Brenda Slazyk of Clifton, NJ is a Psychology major who has a 3.67 grade point average. Brenda excelled as an athlete in high school and was on the Varsity Track and Swim Teams, and was named to the second Team All County for swimming. She was a member of the Engineering Club and participated in the Science League and Merck State Science Day.

This scholarship will help me save money for graduate school and will allow me to graduate debt-free, a true privilege.

Melvin Thomas

Melvin Thomas of Bergenfield, NJ is a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School. As a student there he competed as a sprinter and in cross country events on the Track Team. He was a drummer in the school’s jazz ensemble and in a choral group. He also was a member of the Chess Club and the school newspaper. Melvin volunteered at a veterans’ home in Paramus where he completed more than 200 hours and could be found spending time with veterans who rarely received visitors. Melvin is freshman Biology major who has earned a 2.90 grade point average.

It will enable me to prepare for a good job. Ramapo College is a great place to learn.

Kaitlin Kraft

Kaitlin Kraft of Brick, NJ is a Biology major. She took full advantage of her high school years to explore a variety of leadership activities including dance, the Key Club, Peer Leadership, Leading Through Reading, World Language Club and the yearbook. She won numerous awards as a Girl Scout. She also tutored students and volunteered at Brandywine Assisted Living. Kaitlin, a freshman at Ramapo, has earned a 3.17 grade point average.

I could not be more grateful to the benefactor of the scholarship; their generosity has allowed me to pursue my education without worrying about how to pay for it.

A scholarship is something for which one works hard. It allows me opportunities that may not have been possible otherwise. I am extremely grateful for such extraordinary aid and the possibility to achieve my dreams.

Robert Power

Robert Power is a sophomore majoring in law and society. He has earned a 3.50 grade point average. Robert is from River Edge, New Jersey. In high school Robert was a member of the Business Club all four years. He was also active in the Drama Club, REBEL, New Jersy Boy’s State, and the Debate Team. He plans to attend law school.

Kenneth Walsh

Kenneth Walsh is from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. He is majoring in information systems and is in his junior year. Kenneth has earned a 3.89 grade point average.

A scholarship allows me to more readily prepare myself for my future as well as serve as a motivation to continue to work harder.

Veronica Cavera

Veronica Cavera is from Dumont, New Jersey and is majoring in biology at Ramapo. The sophomore has earned a 3.60 grade point average. In high school Veronica was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Spanish Club. She sang in the chorus, where she was a soprano section leader, and had various positions with Periscope, the student newspaper. She ran winter track in all four years. She plans to pursue a career in genetics.

This scholarship helps prepare me by providing me with the means to further my education, which will, in turn, make it possible for me to achieve all of my goals.

Laura Brown

Freshman Laura Brown is enrolled in the School of Social Science and Human Services and is in her freshman year at Ramapo. She has earned a 3.77 grade point average. Laura is a graduate of Ocean City High School, where she was an active member of the student council and the Psychology Club. She also was a volunteer with Community Action Now and worked as a teacher’s aide in a local preschool. “I would like to help disadvantaged children become successful adults,” Laura says of her future plans.

Scott Harrigan

Scott Harrigan is a sophomore at Ramapo majoring in psychology. He is from Lodi, New Jersey. In high school Scott was a member of the Drama Club, the Science Club, the Chess Club, and the Fishing Club. He plans to be a special education teacher.

Asra Khan

Biology major Asra Khan is in her junior year. She is from Edgewater, New Jersey and has a 3.91 grade point average.

Stephen Miceli

Stephen Miceli is from New Milford, New Jersey and has earned a 3.64 grade point average. He is a sophomore in the Anisfield School of Business who plans to major in international business.

Devin Halek

Devin Halek is a sophomore from Middletown, New Jersey where she volunteered in several community activities. Devin is majoring in history and has earned a 3.86 grade point average. She has run winter and spring track and field events. She plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree in special education, and then will teach in that field.


Jason Whelpley

Jason Whelpley is a senior enrolled in the School of Theoretical and Applied Science. He is pursing the Integrated Science Studies major, concentrating in Public Policy and Administration. He also is pursuing courses toward certification in Elementary Education to teach science. He has earned a 3.77 grade point average. Jason has worked in a number of jobs on campus in the Berrie Center and for Residence Life. He is a member of the Yoga Club and the Science Fiction and Comic Book Club. He has performed in one act plays in the Berrie Center. “I plan to become a teacher in an elementary school, or a science teacher in a middle school,” he says. Jason is from North Arlington, NJ.
