Hackett, Fran Service to America Scholarship

Frances Hackett ’80 was vice president of Administration and OSGLI in Prudential Financial’s Group Insurance department. Among her responsibilities was  life insurance for the military. Mrs. Hackett also served on the Advisory Committee for Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) Veterans and Families, administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, among other volunteer positions. “I want to do something for those who have done so much for our country and help them pursue educational opportunities,” Mrs. Hackett said. “Creating this scholarship ties into my role at Prudential and the OIF/OEF Advisory Committee.” The Fran Hackett Service to America Scholarship benefits Ramapo students who have served, or are currently serving, in the military and are in good academic standing.

2024 Recipient

Anayeli Hernandez Garcia

Anayeli Hernandez Garcia of Fairfield N.J. is a Political Science Major and has maintained a 3.4 GPA.

At Ramapo, Anayeli has been an active member in clubs such as The National Society of Leadership and Success and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Anayeli s also involved with the New Jersey National Guard and her local church. She is a full time Human Resource Specialist in her battalion.

Anayeli Hernandez Garcia

Anayeli Hernandez Garcia of Fairfield, N.J. is a Political Science Major. She has also been involved in off-campus activities and organizations, including NJ National Guard. 

Anayeli is very appreciative to receive the scholarship. 


2021 Recipient

Brandon Goscicki

Brandon Goscicki of Warwick, N.Y. is a Sociology major with a concentration in Criminology. He is proud to have served and deployed as an Infantryman for the U.S. Army. 

Brandon is thankful for being able to attend college and will be the second member of his family to ever graduate from college. 

After graduating, he hopes to continue working with the State Park Forestry Service and help struggling veterans as they transition back home.



2020 Recipient

Samantha Pernetti

“I’m proud to be both a first generation military member as well as a first generation college student/soon to be graduate in my family,” says Nursing student Samantha Pernetti. Samantha works with her unit to help support troops that are deployed overseas by creating care packages and sending letters. “I’m grateful to be part of something bigger than myself.”

Samantha has also been involved in community service activities such as serving the homeless at shelters and soup kitchens, as well as volunteering at animal shelters. Samantha currently works at a doctor’s office to get more healthcare experience before she starts her career as a full time nurse. She plans to work in the hospital setting when she graduates and aims to go back to school for her Master’s Degree so that she can pursue her career as a Nurse Practitioner.

She has a 3.8 GPA and has achieved the Dean’s List each of her semesters at Ramapo. Samantha is from Maywood, N.J.


2016 Recipient

Christopher Bolton

Christopher Bolton of Paramus, NJ is an Engineering Physics major and Mathematics minor. He has a 3.8 GPA. Christopher was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society and is on the Dean’s List.

At Ramapo, Christopher has been active in several organizations and activities, including the Engineering Physics Club, where he served as president, as well as the Math Club. He served as secretary of the Ramapo chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon.

In his hometown of Paramus, Christopher is a volunteer firefighter.



2015 Recipient

Harrison Bruining

Harrison Bruining spent three and one-half years as a rifleman in the Marine Corps. He received numerous commendations for his service including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, among others. Harrison is a member of the Veterans Student Organization and was a member of the color guard for commencement in May 2013. Harrison is in his Sophomore year at Ramapo, majoring in Law and Society. He is from Midland Park, NJ



2014 Recipient

Kamon Jaksarn

Kamon Jaksarn is a senior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. He served in a designated imminent danger area in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqui Freedom/New Dawn. He received numerous awards for exceptional service including the Army Commendation Medal, Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medal National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with star, Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, among others. Kamon has earned a 2.97 grade point average at Ramapo. He is from Oakland, NJ.



2013 Recipient

Andrew Balint

Andrew Balint is serving as a National Guardsman in the Air National Guard. He is a Mathematics major with senior status, and has earned a 3.18 grade point average. He was deployed to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy during the fall 2012 semester, but was able to complete his classes. “He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, earning several medals, badges and commendations,” says Dorothy Gillman, veterans administrator for the College. Andrew is from East Brunswick, NJ.

Dorothea Brune

Dorothea Brune is a cryptologic technician in the U.S. Navy, where she has served five years and earned numerous awards. Thea is majoring in International Studies and planning to graduate in May. “She is an outstanding student carrying a 3.91 grade point average, whose outlook is always positive and upbeat,” says Dorothy Gillman, assistant director of Financial Aid. “She was instrumental in getting the VSO started, working with another veteran to write the constitution and connect with other student veterans to begin the club. She has applied to Columbia University to pursue a graduate degree in Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies. She would like to work one day at the United Nations.”


2011 Recipient

Rebecca Solomita

Rebecca Solomita of Hawthorne, NJ is a member of the New Jersey Air National Guard who devotes all her time to finishing her degree. She is a Literature major and Spanish Language Studies minor. The senior has earned a 3.50 grade point average. Rebecca worked as a teacher’s assistant before enrolling at Ramapo College.

This scholarship will allow me to further my education while providing the opportunity to become an officer in the United States military. I am thankful to Mrs.Hackett for granting me this scholarship and acknowledging my service to our country.


2010 Recipient

Andrea Cantatore

Andrea Cantatore is from Demarest, NJ where he graduated from Northern Valley Regional High School. He served six years in the Air Force as a communications/ network administrator at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska, Al Udeid AB in Quatar and Offutt AFB in Nebraska. He completed Airman Leadership School (USAF) in 2007. Andrea is currently in the Air National Guard and works part time while taking a full course load at Ramapo. He is an Information Systems major with a 3.52 grade point average.

I am very pleased to receive this scholarship because it lets me focus on my studies more and think about how I will pay for them less.
