Ramapo College American Studies Professor John Gronbeck-Tedesco brought history to life in a captivating book signing event at Barnes & Noble, unveiling the compelling narrative of Operation Pedro Pan: The Migration of Unaccompanied Children from Castro’s Cuba. The event drew an audience seeking to delve into the hidden chapters of this monumental Cold War-era migration.

Gronbeck-Tedesco’s book, which was published in October 2022, shed light on an often overlooked episode in history, exploring the ambitious yet fraught undertaking that aimed to rescue 200 unaccompanied Cuban children from the clutches of communism. Initially conceived as a short-term solution until Fidel Castro’s fall from power, the plan quickly evolved into a massive migration effort, eventually bringing over fourteen thousand unaccompanied minors to the United States. He delves into the complexities of lives disrupted by historical forces, weaving together stories of horror and resilience from the Pedro Pans, contributing significantly to the collective memory that continues to shape Cuban American politics and identity.

The Paramus Barnes & Noble recently opened in its new location, which is just 10 minutes from campus. “When so many bookstores are closing, Barnes & Noble has increased the number of stores in the United States, and hosting local author events like this one is an important part of their growth,” shared Gronbeck-Tedesco. “It was a tremendously gratifying experience. There was a festive atmosphere among the people who work there and those that came to buy books. After seven years of researching and writing Operation Pedro Pan, I enjoy finally seeing physical copies of it, sharing my work with an audience, and hearing their thoughts about this history.”

Attendees at the Barnes & Noble event were moved as Gronbeck-Tedesco shared anecdotes from his book, offering a poignant glimpse into the lives of those impacted by this momentous migration. The book signing session provided the opportunity for attendees to ask questions and engage in insightful discussions on refugee experiences and their enduring influence on contemporary Cuban American society.

As attendees left the event with signed copies of “Operation Pedro Pan,” they carried with them not just a book, but a deeper understanding of a historical chapter that continues to resonate decades later, thanks to the illuminating work of Professor John Gronbeck-Tedesco.
