New Jersey Devils Owner, Jeffrey Vanderbeek, is Ramapo College’s Commencement Speaker

MAHWAH – Jeffrey Vanderbeek, owner of the New Jersey Devils, will deliver the commencement address at Ramapo College of New Jersey’s 2009 ceremony Friday, May 15 beginning at 9:45 a.m.  Jonathan N. Marcus, Esq., Ramapo College Class of 1993, will receive the President’s Award of Merit.  A total of 1,317 students who completed their studies in January and May, or are expected to finish in August, are eligible to participate.

Vanderbeek, who has served as principal owner, chairman and managing partner of the New Jersey Devils since 2004, was named the 2008 Sportsman of the Year by the New Jersey Sports Writers’ Association.  He is president of Devils Renaissance Development, LLC, the company responsible for building the Prudential Center in Newark, a 17,625 seat multi-purpose entertainment and sports arena that is home to the hockey team.

Prior to his involvement with the Devils, Vanderbeek held various positions with Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.  His philanthropic endeavors include serving as vice chairman of the Dorothy Rodbell Cohen Foundation for Cancer Research, chairman of the Greater Newark Holiday Fund, a board member of the Newark Alliance and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Newark.

The College’s President’s Award of Merit will be awarded to Jonathan N. Marcus, Esq., Class of 1993.  Marcus, who lives with his wife, Tammy, and two daughters in Mahwah, graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Law and Society.  He continued his education at Seton Hall University School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review and was awarded a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, in 1996.  He is admitted to practice before the New Jersey Bar.  The honoree is assistant general counsel at KPMG LLP in New York.  Prior to that position, he provided representation and counseling to clients in connection with corporate transactional matters, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, having served as a senior associate in the Corporate Department of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, L.L.P. and as an associate in the Corporate Department of Sills Cummis & Gross, P.C.  Marcus serves as a director on Ramapo College’s Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, as chairman of the KPMG Ramapo Alumni Chapter and is a founding member of the Alumni Advisory Board of the College’s School of American and International Studies.  Marcus and his wife are active in their church supporting youth activities and community service projects including a soup kitchen, food pantry and services for less fortunate families.
