(Mahwah) – A lecture by award-winning author and Tenafly native Peter Balakian will be presented Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at Ramapo College of New Jersey. He will speak about his new book, The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response (HarperCollins, 2004), which was a New York Times Notable Book selection and on the newspaper’s bestseller list. The event, sponsored by The Gross Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies and the History Club, is being held in the York Room of the Mansion on the College campus. Admission is free and all are welcome.

In addition to The Burning Tigris, Balakian is the author of seven books. Black Dog of Fate won the 1998 PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for the Art of the Memoir and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities Book Prize, and was a best book of the year for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Publisher’s Weekly. He also authored a book on American poet Theodore Roethke and was the co-translator of the Armenian poet Siamanto’s Bloody News From My Friend. From 1976-1996 he edited, with Bruce Smith, the poetry journal Graham House Review. He is the recipient of many awards, prizes and civic citations including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, an Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Ahanhit Literary Prize. He has been featured on national television and radio programs, and foreign editions of his work have been published in Europe and the Middle East.

A human rights activist, Balakian has been deeply involved in the national and international movement for Armenian Genocide recognition. He grew up in Teaneck and Tenafly, New Jersey, and holds a B.A. from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University. He is Donald M. and Constance H. Rebar Professor of the Humanities and a professor of English at Colgate University. He was the first director of Colgate’s Center for Ethics and World Societies. The author lives in Hamilton, New York with his wife Helen and their two children, Sophia and James.
