Dance Stories: The Rise of Timba, and Resurgence of Rueda de Casino

October 20, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Sponsored by the Culture Club

Cuban dance rhythms reflect a mix of styles including Son, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha and Rumba. These rhythmic dance styles are the foundation of Rueda de Casino, a circle dance in which a leader calls out different movements or steps. The dance became popular during the 1950s. In years, rueda has been experiencing world-wide resurgence with the  rise of timba, a Cuban-style salsa. Los Van Van, one of the most well-known timba bands in Cuba, especially made this genre popular. Multimedia presentation by Professor Edna Negrón.

SC 219: Friends Hall
Light Refreshments provided.
