Mahwah, NJ- On September 9, the captivating photography exhibition The Translucence of Time: Jonathan Lipkin goes on view in the Berrie Center Pascal Gallery at Ramapo College of New Jersey on the picturesque Mahwah, NJ campus.

This one-person exhibition of photographs features an exploration of time, infinity, and our relation to the ocean. There will be a reception for the exhibition on Wednesday, September 16 , from 5-7 p.m. The artist will give an informal artist’s talk in the Pascal Gallery at 6 p.m. An additional public program featuring a conversation between Jonathan Lipkin and poet James Hoch will be held on Wednesday, October 7, at 5 p.m., in the Pascal Gallery. The exhibition continues on view through October 14.

Jonathan Lipkin describes his work in the following statement:

“What is it about the infinite that so enchants us? I photograph the sea to capture, transform, and engage the mystery of the ocean. Printed at monumental scale and at a width twice their height, my photographs envelop the viewer. Their aspect ratio approximates our field of vision as we gaze at the vista of the ocean’s limitless horizon – the nothing we see when you forget you are looking, a place that is not a place. In my photographs space is collapsed. And the image shows a flat plane with little distinction between foreground or background, a recreation of our experience of the ocean and its unavoidable gravity.

The ocean is repetitive, ever changing, and yet always the same. Waves crash steadily onto the beach as the horizon stretches limitlessly before us. This series examines our relationship with the natural world and our perception of reality. I understand the ocean, and myself, by gazing to the sea through the translucence of time.”

Jonathan Lipkin was a professor of visual communication design at Ramapo College for 31 years. He holds degrees from Wesleyan University and the School of Visual Arts, and maintains studios in New York City and East Hampton. Lipkin’s photographs have been exhibited and published internationally, and are held in public and private collections. He is the author of Photography Reborn (Abrams Books, 2004) and In the Realm of the Circuit (Prentice Hall, 2003). His artist’s book Livingston County (Conveyor Books, 2011) was selected for inclusion in the IndyBooks Library. He has lectured extensively on photography and digital media.

Pascal Gallery hours are: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 1-5 p.m. and Wednesday 1-7 p.m.
