MAHWAH, N.J.—A new Art Portfolio Preparation program will be offered at Ramapo College of New Jersey this summer. Aspiring artists interested in beginning or expanding their art portfolios for art school and college admissions are invited to attend an Information Session led by the program instructor, Mr. William Kooistra. Information Sessions are scheduled Thursday, March 23, 5:30-6:15 p.m. and Sunday, May 21, 4-4:45 p.m. in BC-317. Pre-registration for the information sessions is requested at www.ramapo.edu/cipl/artportfolio.

Art Portfolio Prep 1: Meeting the Requirements is a basic foundational course meant to introduce the fundamentals of a general portfolio required by art schools and college art departments. Each day is devoted to a different requirement of the portfolio with the goal that each student complete at least five finished art works over the week to include in their portfolio. Students will execute developmental and comparative studies along with keeping a visual journal that will both explore ideas covered in the course as well as help students understand how to develop portfolio works in the future.

Art Portfolio Prep 2: Ideas, Process and Development explores three different aspects of the general portfolio in depth over a three-week period. Each week is focused on a particular theme. Assignments include extensive studies that allow students to build required skills as well as create various variations to help understand the creative process. Students also keep a visual journal where they explore their ideas including sketches, written entries and any other visual material that will help develop personal responses to the assignments. Students execute a variety of finished works to include in their portfolios that will emphasize different solutions to areas of focus. Students may attend one, two or all three weekly sessions allowing them to pick and choose either areas of interest or those they feel will help them develop stronger work for their portfolio.
