MAHWAH, N.J. — CHiKA: SEI06, a one-person installation of interactive works, will go on view in the Pascal Gallery at Ramapo College on Wednesday, February 3.  There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, February 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. with an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m.  The exhibition continues through March 4.

CHiKA is an interactive visual artist and educator. Her work has been described as a symphony of light, minimalist geometric shapes and visuals that explore and invite people to reinvent themselves through the relationship between light, sound and their own unexpected physical reactions.

SEI is a Japanese homophone which means star, silent or live. The installation is brought to life through the public’s interaction. By placing a hand over the sensor, the public activates the volume of sound, brightness of light and the dormant installation, moving light over the sculpture and creating a star-shaped afterimage.

CHiKA is also the creator of a mapping marathon workshop, Mappathon, which teaches mapping projection technique to create site-specific installations. She will be working with Ramapo visual arts students in conjunction with the Pascal Gallery exhibition.

Originally from Japan, her work has been shown at the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Art and Design, the Hammer Museum, San Francisco Art Institute, Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneva, Museo Regional de Guadalajara, Matadero Madrid, Theatre Maissonneuve, Biennal in Venezuela, eBay, New York University, Cooper Union, The School of Visual Arts, The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Eyebeam, Harvestworks, Milllenium, Mapping Festival, Dumbo Arts Festival, MOD festival, Blip Festival New York and Tokyo, Mutek, Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Gramercy Theatre.

This project is funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Pascal Gallery is located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m.  For more information contact Sydney Jenkins at 201-684-7147.
