The Honorable Judge Jose L. Linares to Speak at Ramapo College

MAHWAH, N.J. – The Honorable Jose L. Linares, United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey, will be the guest speaker at Ramapo College of New Jersey on Wednesday, November 16. Judge Linares will discuss his career in law and his tenure on the Federal Bench at a special event in Friends Hall at 1 p.m. The Judge’s visit will include a Q&A session.

The event, being held in partnership with the Office of the President, Student Government Association, Ramapo College Board of Trustees and the Center for Student Involvement, is free and open to the public.

Judge Linares, who presides on the bench in the Federal Courthouse in Newark, is the first Hispanic to hold that position. His judicial career began in 2000 when he was appointed to the Essex County Superior Court Bench, where he sat in the Civil Division and was responsible for handling complicated and substantial medical malpractice cases. He was nominated and unanimously confirmed to the Federal District Court in 2002.

In addition to his many achievements in the legal profession, Judge Linares dedicates his time to civic, non-profit related activities and volunteer youth groups, is an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School,  and serves as mentor to young men and women who are interested in pursuing careers in law.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Judge Linares and his family escaped to the United States in 1965 when he was 12 years old. He received a B.A. from then-Jersey City State College in 1975 and a J.D. from Temple Law School in 1978. He was a supervising attorney of the New York City Department of Investigation from 1978 to 1980. He was in private practice in New Jersey from 1980 to 2000.

The College also looks forward to hosting in 2017 the Honorable Paul J. Vichness, retired Essex County Superior Court judge. Details to be announced.
