(Mahwah) – In celebration of Judith Peck’s 50-year career as a sculptor, two exhibitions, both entitled This Life, will be installed at Fordham University at Lincoln Center, Columbus Avenue and 60th Street, New York City. Peck is a professor of art at Ramapo College of New Jersey.

The Entrance Gallery exhibition, on view through December 20, will include works from two series: bronze unique sculptures titled Other Worlds, and the mixed media collection, USA Today. Also included are several semi-abstract figure sculptures in bronze and in fiberglass, and the haunting Holocaust memorial, Passage.

The second and major exhibition opens March 15, 2000 on the Robert Moses Plaza of the university and will remain on view through December 3, 2000. Some 16 large sculptures, predominantly in fiberglass, will be exhibited, including the 20-foot biblical sculpture, Celestial Gifts, and the life-size three-figure grouping, Appalachia.

Peck’s sculptures range from realistic and semi-abstract figures in bronze, fiberglass, steel and mixed media to fully abstract images in the new series, Other Worlds. “My work is inspired by people,” says Peck, “how they endure pain and celebrate joy, the choices people make and the choices made for them by history, by chance, by the intensities of their emotions and experience. These themes often involve people alone and in families, and people alone in families.”

Vivienne Thaul Wechter, curator of exhibitions at Fordham University has written, “Peck’s formidable intellect seems wed to artistic propulsion to produce a remarkable range of work . . .her sculpture communicates peace, tranquility, danger, violence and sensuality, with themes of family, love, seduction, and women’s choices. In her reclining women the grace and dance of the curves recall Matisse’s drawings where line carries the weight, inner volume and strength.”

Peck’s work has been widely exhibited in museums and university settings. She is represented in some 80 public and private collections, including the American Art Collection of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Ghetto Fighters Museum in Acco, Israel. Her work has been included in the International Biennial of art in Malta; the Biennial of American Painting and Sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and the Detroit Institute; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and illustrated in the Smithsonian publication, Designing Outdoor Sculpture, prepared with the National Museum of American Art.

Peck holds a doctoral degree in art and art education from New York University and two master’s degrees from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She studied sculpture at the Art Students League and the Sculpture Center in New York. She is the author of three books on creative processes, including the widely-used text, Sculpture as Experience: Working With Clay, Wire, Wax, Plaster and Found Objects.
