(Mahwah) – Ramapo College of New Jersey exceeded a number of enrollment records for the fall 2003 semester, including largest overall enrollment, largest residential population, most applications for the incoming class and highest level of student preparedness. The state liberal arts college boasts its largest enrollment ever, with an undergraduate and graduate population totaling 5,631.

The College’s transition from a commuter to a residential campus is reflected in the 2,273 students who chose to live on campus, the most in the College’s history. This represents 90 percent of freshman and 57 percent of all full-time students.

Applications to the College were the highest in its history, numbering 5,462. Our top-rated faculty, new residence halls and beautiful campus increasingly attract highly prepared students,” says Peter Goetz, dean of enrollment management. Not only has the number of students who enrolled at the College risen, but so has the retention rate, with those continuing their education at Ramapo increasing to 3,443. The College also has its highest graduate enrollment, reaching 389 students.

These record-breaking numbers have been achieved while the preparedness of incoming students has continued to rise. Incoming freshmen averaged 573 on the verbal SAT and 582 on math, for a combined SAT score of 1155. Class rank for enrolled freshmen has risen as well, with the average student ranking in the top 20 percent of his/her high school graduating class.

Ramapo College is now considered highly competitive,” says Goetz. Increasingly, it is the first-choice college among the region’s best students.”
