(Mahwah) – Italian-born jazz vocalist Roberta Gambarini, who has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McCrae, will perform at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Friday, November 22 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater.

Born in Torino, Italy into a family where jazz was appreciated and loved, Gambarini began listening to this music as a child. By the time she was 17, she was performing in jazz clubs around northern Italy. In 1984, she took third place in a national jazz radio-TV competition leading to performance opportunities at jazz festivals throughout Italy and to recordings, the first of which featured pianist Mike Melillo. Venues included the Pompei International Jazz Festival, national festivals in Bologna, Milan, Siena and Umbria, as well as Jazz at Teatro Morlacchi in Perugi and Musicus Concentus in Florence. Currently Gambarini tours with drummer Jimmy Cobb, pianist Ronnie Matthews and bassist Jimmy Woode.

In 1997 Gambarini worked with French Hammond organ player Emmanuel Bex touring jazz clubs throughout Italy. One year later, she came to the United States with a scholarship from the New England Conservatory in Boston. That same year, she took third place at the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition in Washington, DC.

Gambarini has appeared at the Schomburg Center with the Jazz Legacy Ensemble, at the Kennedy Center with Monk On Monk,” at The Jazz Standard with the True Blue All-Stars with Billy Higgins and in the Kenny Dorham 75th Birthday Festival. She is currently working on her first American CD release.

The Sharp Theater is located in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College. Admission is $21 for adults, $17 for seniors and $10 for students. For additional information, call (201) 684-7844.
