(Mahwah) – The Seagull, Anton Chekhov’s play about writers, actors, theater, sons, mothers and lovers, will be staged by the Ramapo College of New Jersey Theater Program November 6 through 8, and 12 through 15 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater. Maria Vail Guevara, associate professor of theater at Ramapo College and a professional actress, directs the play and 13-member cast.

Originally staged in 1896 in St. Petersburg, The Seagull had its true birth in 1898 at the Moscow Art Theatre. Set on a country estate in Russia, the play changed how theater is viewed and ushered in the era of realism. Chekhov holds a microscope to human behavior and delineates what is beautiful, painful, tragic and ridiculous about the human condition. In addition to The Seagull, Chekhov also achieved acclaim for Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard.

Maria Vail Guevara’s directorial achievements at Ramapo College include Tennessee Williams’ Six by Ten as well as Bertolt Brecht’s and Kurt Weill’s Three Penny Opera. She recently directed Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls, also at Ramapo.
