(Mahwah) – Pianist Fred Hersch and vocalist Kurt Elling will be featured in a rare duo appearance at the Sharp Theater on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey Thursday, October 7 at 8 p.m.

With multiple Grammy nominations between them, Hersch and Elling debuted their dynamic performance in a sold-out limited engagement last December. Pianist and composer Fred Hersch has earned a place among the foremost jazz artists in the world today. He is widely recognized for his ability to reinvent the standard jazz repertoire – investing time-tested classics with keen insight, fresh ideas and extraordinary technique – while steadfastly creating his own unique body of work. Among his accomplishments are a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition and two Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance. He has recorded more than 20 albums as a solo artist or bandleader.

Kurt Elling has been hailed by critics and audiences for combining improvised scatting with an appreciation of the classic jazz songbook. He is also becoming a musical matchmaker. For Man in the Air, Elling’s sixth release for Blue Note Records, he created original lyrics for compositions by such giants as saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist Pat Metheny and others close to his heart. A six-time Grammy nominee, Elling has earned a reputation as the contemporary writer of vocalese, the art of setting words to instrumental solos.

Tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and $12 for youth. The performance will be held in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center for Visual and Performing Arts on the campus of Ramapo College. Info: 201.684.7844.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.
