(Mahwah) – The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will bring the dynamic freedom of American modern dance together with the elegant splendor of Asian Art in a new work, Unbroken Thread, at Ramapo College of New Jersey Saturday, October 2 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater.
Unbroken Thread is an exploration of personal images inspired by the traditional art of Chinese knotting, with an original score composed by Jason Kao Hwang. The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company transports audiences beyond cultural boundaries. Celebrating the diversity of ideas on the immigrant’s journey, the company bridges the gap of understanding between cultures.
On Friday, October 1 in the Sharp Theater, Ramapo College will present a behind-the-scenes look at the choreography process as members of this contemporary dance ensemble talk about and demonstrate the art of the dance. Admission will be free to Creating the Dance.”
World-renowned director Nai-Ni Chen earned the honor of having Unbroken Thread named one of the Top Ten Dance Events of 2004 by The Star Ledger during its New York premiere. The Nai-NiChen Dance Company has been awarded Citations of Excellence numerous times by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Since 1996, the company has been a resident company at the Harlem School of the Arts in Manhattan and receives support from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
Tickets are $21 for adults, $19 for seniors and $12 for youth. The performance will be held in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center for Visual and Performing Arts on the campus of Ramapo College. Info: 201.684.7844.
