(Mahwah) – The Tannahill Weavers, acclaimed as one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands, will perform at Ramapo College of New Jersey Sunday, October 7 at 3 p.m. in the Sharp Theater. The band presents a unique combination of traditional melodies on pipes, flute and fiddle blended with modern, driving rhythmic accompaniment and powerful three and four part vocal harmonies. As the Winnipeg Free Press noted, “The music may be old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.”

Recognized early in their career in Europe, the Tannahills won the Scotstar Award for Folk Record of the Year with their third album, The Tannahill Weavers. 1994 saw the release to critical acclaim of Capernaum, which won the Indie Award in the U.S. for Celtic album of the Year from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors and Manufacturers. Their 14th album, Epona, was released in 1998. The band’s name is derived from the historic weaving industry of their hometown in Paisley, Scotland, and after local poet laureate, Robert Tannahill.

Reviews from the music community in the U.S. as well as around the world hail the spirited group as a must see. “If you haven’t yet discovered the emotional power and beauty of Celtic music, then you owe it to yourself to see firsthand one of the best traditional Celtic folk bands in the world. No other group comes close to matching their musical style and breathtaking harmony,” stated a review in the Miami Valley Guide to Musical Diversity.

Tickets for the Tannahill Weavers’ Ramapo College performance are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students with a valid I.D. For more information, please call (201) 684-7888. For tickets, call (201) 684-7844.
