Test results on water samples from all over campus at Ramapo College of New Jersey show the water supply to be safe for all purposes, including drinking. The slightly elevated level of bacteria previously found in the two newest residence halls was confined to the area of the new construction. “Final laboratory analyses from water testing revealed compliant microbiological results for all parameters for which we analyzed,” stated Dr. Melvin N. Kramer, president of Environmental Health Associates, Ltd. and a consultant to the College.
Both Bischoff Hall, which opened in August 1999, and Mackin Hall, scheduled to open this week, have undergone hyperchlorination according to Department of Environmental Protection protocols to cleanse the plumbing system. Further tests of those two buildings were run after the chlorine was flushed from the system, with results expected over the holiday weekend. Periodic ongoing tests will be conducted to assure a safe water supply.
Earlier in the week, the start of the fall semester was postponed to allow time for the hyperchlorination and further testing. The new schedule calls for classes to begin Monday, September 11. Freshmen will move in on Saturday, September 9 and upperclassmen on Sunday, September 10. Freshman orientation will take place over the September 9-10 weekend.
