(Mahwah) – Richie Havens, famous for his soulful, fiery singing style, will perform in the Sharp Theater at Ramapo College of New Jersey Saturday, September 29 at 8 p.m.  A popular music icon, Havens has been performing for over four decades and has proven that his messages of brotherhood and personal freedom are as timeless as his voice.

A riveting performance at the 1969 Woodstock festival thrust Havens into the limelight, as his improvised song “Freedom” became the anthem for an entire generation.  He was no stranger to performing at that time, however; Havens had organized his friends into doo-wop groups on the streets of Brooklyn from an early age.
He left Brooklyn at 20 to seek out Greenwich Village, where he found it easier to express himself.  Havens recorded two albums worth of demo tapes before he finally landed his first record deal with the Verve label in 1967, and released the album Mixed Bag.  Over 25 albums later, Havens is now celebrating the release of his newest work, Grace of the Sun.

Tickets for Richie Havens are $30, $27 and $24 for adults and $18 for children under 17.  Senior citizens are eligible for a five percent discount.  The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts on the Ramapo College campus.  For more information call (201) 684-7844.
