(Mahwah) – Ramapo College instructor Margaret Murphy – whose paintings explore the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion – will exhibit 10 watercolor paintings in a one-woman show at Ramapo College of New Jersey’s George T. Potter Library Galleries April 8-June 14. Admission is free. Library gallery hours are Monday -Thursday 8 a.m. to midnight, Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m. to midnight.

My paintings explore issues of representation and experience while poking fun at the commercially driven world we live in. The boundaries are blurred between reality and illusion in our lives and I try to recreate that visually in my paintings,” says Murphy, a Jersey City resident. Describing the upcoming Ramapo show, she adds: I combine painted illusions with photographic collage elements in traditional landscape and still life compositions. These unassuming paintings can reveal stark cultural concerns related to gender, religion and pop culture.”

Murphy’s work has been featured in group shows throughout New Jersey and New York as well as Chicago. These include exhibits at the Newark Museum, the Montclair Museum of Art, and the Islip Museum, East Islip, Long Island. In 1998, Murphy was commissioned by the Montclair Art Museum to create a site-specific installation for a miniature golf course on the museum grounds.

She was also an artist-in-residence at the Newark Museum, and is a board
member of Pro Arts, a Jersey City based organization. Her work is featured currently at the $99 Bargain Store Show at Cynthia Broan Gallery, Manhattan, as well as the New Jersey Arts Annual at Morris Museum, Morristown.
