(Mahwah) – “The best way to learn a language is to be surrounded by it and compelled to use it,” says Dr. Rosetta D’Angelo, professor of Italian at Ramapo College of New Jersey. This is the philosophy behind a program at Ramapo that immerses participants in their choice of skill levels in French, Italian and Spanish. Students in the total immersion program, to be held over a three-day weekend, will live on campus and sign an agreement to speak only the target language. The French weekend is scheduled May 31-June 2, the Spanish weekend is June 7-9, and Italian immersion weekend is June 21-23.

The total immersion weekend plunges participants into a continuous and intensive use of the language and provides them with basic to advanced conversational skills for travel, professional use and immediate communication. Under the guidance of native-speaking professionals, participants will experience two-and-a-half days of complete immersion in typical situations.

The language study will be reinforced with simulations of customs, conversations, shopping etc.; master classes and small group instruction; films and videos; campus outings and picnics; songs, music, games and dance. Students with no prior knowledge of the language, as well as advanced speakers, are welcome to enroll in the program; instruction and activities will be adapted to the different levels of the participants.

The program cost, $350 ($300 without on-campus housing), includes tuition, housing and meals. Potential students should register as soon as possible; payment is due by May 25.
