(Mahwah) – Bergen County’s own Hawthorne Symphony Orchestra, composed of music professionals from the Garden State, will offer an eclectic concert highlighting the works of renowned American composers and guest-starring a prominent jazz trumpeter Sunday, March 9, 3 p.m. in the Sharp Theater.

John Minkoff, who conducts the Hawthorne Symphony Orchestra, said they plan to open with the second act of LaTraviata followed by a second half that features a line-up of well-respected and acclaimed American composers, including George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter.

Ed Polcer, a jazz cornetist and New Jersey native who has played venues from California to New York, will perform with the symphony, injecting jazzy rhythms and solos. Polcer also leads his own group, the Jazz All-Stars. Polcer grew up in Prospect Park and was a 1954 graduate of Hawthorne High School.

Polcer joined Benny Goodman’s Sextet for an American tour in 1973. He also toured the U.S. and Canada with Bob Greene’s World of Jelly Roll Morton” troupe. In 1997, Polcer presented The Magic of Swing Street, a show of classic jazz in its many forms as played by small groups on New York’s West 52nd Street, also known as Swing Street.

Tickets are $17 for adults; $12 for seniors; and $8 for students with a valid ID. The Sharp Theater is located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College. For more information or to order tickets, call (201) 684-7844.
