Africana Professoriate Welcomes Director, Author and Activist Melvin Van Peebles to Ramapo College

Professoriate Issues Call for Conference Presentations

(Mahwah) – Movie director, author and activist Melvin Van Peebles will discuss his greatest role as a family man when he delivers the keynote address at the Sixth Annual State of the Africana Professoriate Conference at Ramapo College of New Jersey March 29 and 30.  He will speak at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 29.

The theme of this year’s conference will be “The Black Familial Structure.”  Van Peebles and other guest speakers will address issues relating to Black family life. Workshops and special events will run throughout the two days.

Ramapo College’s Africana Institute, which will host the conference, is holding an open call for conference presentations.  The proposal deadline is February 23.  Anticipated tracks include:

  • The Roles of Black Women in the Family
  • The Roles of Black Men in the Family
  • Single Black Men and Working Women Raising Families
  • The Portrayal of Black Family Life in the Media
  • Criminalization Issues Impacting Black Family Life
  • The Roles of Educators in Deconstructing Models of Black Family Life
  • Alternative Familial Systems

Proposals of not more than 150 words may be submitted to Dr. Henry Vance Davis, Professor of History, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mahwah, NJ 07430.  Submissions also may be sent electronically to hdavis@ramapo.edu.  The fee for presenting at the conference is $50.
