(Mahwah) – New Generation Dance Company will present Aires de Tango” Saturday, February 4 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey.  In conjunction with the performance, a tango workshop will be offered February 4 from 1 to 3 p.m.  Attendees, who may come with a partner or alone, will learn the art of tango from Argentinean dance master Karina Romero.

In recent years Argentinean tango has evolved from an intimate dance found almost exclusively in the cafés, clubs and streets of Buenos Aires, to a social dance taught at ballroom schools and performed for audiences. New Generation Dance Company takes the beauty and intensity of tango a step further, fusing it with the grace of ballet and the ingenuity of modern dance.
The dances, performed by the 12 members of New Generation, will be set to the music of Astor Piazzolla.  An immensely innovative player of the Argentinean bandonean (an instrument similar to an accordion), Piazzolla has taken the instrument and tango to the international concert stage, without diluting its roots in the working-class dancehalls and dockland nightclubs of Buenos Aires.  Updating tango for new generations, his style, called nuevo tango, has attracted a huge South American audience and also opposition from tango traditionalists.

Tickets for Aires de Tango” are $24 for adults, $21 for senior citizens and $15 for youth.  Tickets for the workshop cost $5 each with the purchase of a ticket to Aires de Tango” and $10 if purchased separately.

The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts on the Ramapo College campus.  For more information call 201.684.7844.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
